    Default Cleaning older Razors up

How do you guys typically clean a newly attained old Razor. I've been having difficulty honing so I bought two old Henckels Razors I found. I'd like to remove some small rust spots on one, and clean up the handle on the other. Is alchohol okay to use? Any suggestions and tips are great!

Don't soak your razors in alcohol or they will rust. You get a cotton ball and wipe them off with it to disinfect it, but something like Barbicide is better. Get a good metal polish like Flitz, Simichrome or something like that and use an old t-shirt or soft cloth and just work on it for awhile. You can use a q-tip to get inside the scales to get the gunk out of there. There is a Brian Donofrio video on restoration that's pretty good (look in the Videos section on this page).

It would help if we knew your location so as to be more specific on recommendations. I use Maas, purchased at a Super Wal Mart on the cleaning aisle.

I usually apply some WD-40 to the blade to take off any old grease or oil then wash the whole thing in mild soap and warm water. A q tip for the scales works well. After that you can see what kind of a job your up against. Sometimes some simichrome is all you need. Sometimes some cape cod polishing cloths will do it and some times its time to get the dremmel out.

I would agree with the Maas on both the blade and the handle. Rust can be removed, but some pitting will remain. You can definitely get them back in service though and old Henckels are superior shavers. Lynn
