Thumbs up It's Good To Be A Man Around Here! (For a Change)

I'm still fresh to the forum here, but just from hopping around the forums and taking a look at the postings this looks like a fine site, with some high quality people handing out advice...

Good, formidable, respectable men. Something about the straight razor seems to draw them in like flies to honey.

Sometimes I feel that good men aren't appreciated or understood as much as they used to be.

Coming to a place like this to share an interest in such an enjoyable and satisfying activity that is uniquely male is something that brings a little more enjoyment and encouragement to my days.

The temperament of this forum is so down-to-earth, relaxed, and genuine that it's hard not to comment on it.

So, I'm new...but hopefully I'll learn quick, and stick around for some time to come.

Looking forward to a lot of good shaves with all of you, and very little if any bleeding .

    Cheers fellas!

Learning to maintain and use a straight takes time, effort, study and concentration. Your average bum off the street won't bother with it since he can pick up a disposable in the same pharmacy where he buys his syringes. I'm the exception. I don't know how they let me in here

    LOL!

Good point....I was hoping to avoid detection, but I think you let the cat out of the bag on me now, too.

Sooner or later we'll show our true colors, when a little slice of an ear or a nose is conveniently missing, right? Hahaha.

On a good note we can't be all-bad. In the age of more convenient methods of shaving, we are going along with something very orderly and traditional. However your average person doesn't understand. While the bathroom is being renovated, I am keeping my strops and my razor in the living room. Had this young lady over. When she saw it, she asked me "who are you planning on killing with that?" Without skipping a beat (for a change), I told her "my be ard". To my enviro-freak friends I have to talk about how many disposables end up in landfills. Do you notice a trend? It seems like we have to justify our choice of shaving methods. The modern society is becoming more about greed, lack of emotion and expectation of instant gratification. This is one of my methods of rebelling against it and anyone who does the same deserves some respect for doing the same.

You are speaking the truth. Everything is hurry up get it done. Who cares what the ramifications are.

Let us see some of the ramifications:
    1) Big companies like Shick and Gilette get rich.
    2) Shavers waste a lot of $$$ on inferior shaving products.
    3) Dozens of BILLIONS of disposable razors and who knows how many cans of shaving foam/gel end up on landfills EVERY YEAR.

I started using electric shavers at the age of 16 because disposables irritated my skin. Close to 10 years later I decided to switch to straight because:
    1) It gives me a better shave.
    2) It's about as cheap as using a good electric shaver.
    3) It's better for the environment.
    4) There is a definite cool-factor
    and most importantly...
    5) Every shave fills me with a sense of accomplishment. To get a good shave, you have to hone your blade properly, develop a good stropping technique and learn how to shave without turning your face into a bloody mess. Overcoming those challenges is very satisfying.

But what about the sense of accomplishment in OWNING a 5 (now 6) bladed vibrating Super Face Mower. That must be worth some prestige mustn't it? Isn't it all about how acceptable I am in society anyhow? How am I supposed to get ahead if I'm not doing what everybody else is? You guys are nuts! Who cares about the land fill?! Who cares about inferior shave? At least I'm getting one and nobody's looking at me like I'm crazy, not like they do at YOU guys. Beside, with an open blade like that, it's just a matter of time before you cut your adams apple off. Look at Richz. He almost accidentally killed kimself just the other day. You couldn't make me shave with one of those murder weapons if you tried. Just shut up and let me not think for the rest of my life will you!

Wow X, I'm impressed. That was an excellent analysis od the baaah-baaah mentality. I'm too egocentrical to come up with something like that lol. Are you a writer or an actor by any chance?
I remember when the 3-bladed razors were all the rage and I called'em the Red Barons. Too bad that scientific and engineering research is more and more driven my the marketing departments. Had many arguments with a prof in my senior year on this topic. Since media studies are his specialty, he has a positive opinion of this trend lol.

Imagine the affordable high quality straight razors we could have if the same effort went into THEM as goes into the junk. Boggles the mind.

So which one is it... Writer or actor?
I agree but they could not make NEARLY as much money as they do on disposables. Your average person spends more on disposables for a year than they would for a straight that would last a lifetime (if they started mass-producing them). Therefore, disposables are about 50-60 times more profitable.
