Default Advice And Opinions Please Again

Thanks to all who replied to previous post. Razors arrived and delighted with them. Looking for some help :

Can someone tell me the size of them, description ? They are both sharp, but found the small razor (not the soligen) a great size, small and easy to handle, wondering what size it is. Both razors in great condition, but the soligen has 2 pit marks just under makers description, and the other smaller razor has what I can only describe as a grey patch (top left of blade) and some rust between the handle and blade. Can anyone advise how to get the rust out,and the grey patch, plus the slight pit mark on the soligen. I do love the size and feel of the small razor..and if looking again would like to know size etc. Photos can be viewed at....please have a look, they are not well taken but you should see the above.

Again thanks to all on this board for previous help.

I posted a link to a polishing video with lots of good tips on the restoration forum. You may want to check it out.

For finding the sizes of the razors take a ruler marked in 1/8 inch increments and measure edge to spine. Razor sizes are measured in 1/8s, I.E. 3/8 thru 8/8s. Hope this helps.

You will want too search these forums and read up on restoration posts. These are both very nice razors, I would be leary too learn on them.
They both basically just need some polishing with a metal polish like MASS or Flitz. Then they will need too be honed before shaving. The superb 61 razor will need some work getting that nick out of the edge. If you want you can send that one too me and I will take the nick out and get it shave ready for you. I would only ask for return postage be included with the razor.

    Trinity,

All 3 of them are really nice razors with a minimum of issues. The Solingen and the World Master both look like they are 6/8 size. The 61 Superb looks to be a 5/8 size. That's just based on the relative positions of the writing on the blade versus how much metal is below it. You can measure it to be sure.

The small nicks can be removed by honing. Send it to one of the folks on the board that do honing and they can handle it for you.

The discoloration and dark areas is fairly minor. It's most likely a small amount of surface rust or tarnishing from shaving cream that wasn't totally removed. You can remove most or all of it with a little polishing work. It's really up to you. None of it is really in the way as far as shaving goes, and a few rust spots here and there won't affect their use at all. The spots on the shank will be a bit more difficult to polish out since they are in such small spaces. Get some Flitz, Maas, Simichrome or other metal polish, an old t-shirt or lint free cloth and just start polishing away. If you have access to a Dremel tool with buffing wheel (soft cloth type) it will make it much easier, otherwise you'll have sore fingers for several days from all the polishing. There are some great resto videos available on the site that should help too.

The pitting on the shank will require the most work and frankly I would not bother with such a small blemish. Pitting requires much more than just MAAS, it requires sandpaper and several grades of that followed by polishing. Its simply not worth it.

The other razor with the blemish on the toe end I would also leave alone. My impression is that it is also pitting. If its just discoloration and not pitting then you can use some MAAS first to see if that works and if not then use some coarser compound like Flexcut Gold or Emery. You will run the risk of removing any gold wash and also of removing the etching. So you decide if its worth it..

I would practice on a couple of other Ebay specials first. Those razors are just to nice to ruin.

    Just my two cents,
