Thread: Read receipts in PMs

I find this feature to be fairly annoying and not very useful. Therefore I would like to suggest disabling it (unless there are objections to this idea).

you can always click the no option when sending the pm to turn it off if it bothers you.

Oh I do that routinely, however:
1) I find that annoying
2) Some people don't know that they can do that

I asked about that and go t the word that although it is annoying to have to click (or simply hit Return to accept which I don't like doing) is just way to difficult for the webmaster to code. Maybe someday Joe or David will work it out, but for now that's just the way it is.

That's why I'm raising the issue publically.. To see how many people are annoyed by it. It may expedite the process lol.

I don't let this minor thing bother me. I always click "Cancel" if I don't want a "read receipt", which means always. So if sending a pm means a couple of extra clicks, I'm okay with it. It beats the hell out of writing a letter, licking an envelope, afixing a stamp and driving to the post office!

I think it is fine. Most of the times when I send a private message I want to make sure it didn't go out in space and that the other person read it.

Once in a while I want the read receipt. I would hate to have that option removed.

How about having it as a check-box instead of being prompted whenever you send a pm? That would incorporate the best of both worlds.

Before we get to polarized on this... let me remind everyone that the vBulletin s/w used for this forum is a commercial product that "works the way it works".

That said, as-is vBulletin allows read-receipts to either be completely enabled or completely disabled. There are some "hacks" that allow it to be more configurable, but we'll likely not go there since every hack installed becomes a life-long support issue as they (potentially) need to be re-engineered every time a new version of the s/w is installed.

Finally, as you can see from the replies so far, some people want them and some don't... and this polarization is as old as the hills! E.g, the same feelings existed in the early days of computer networks when read receipts were first introduced for emails... eventually they were made optional as some users took the position that it was none of the senders business as to whether they had read their email or not. It appears vBulletin has followed this model as a middle ground to best appease the conflict
