    Default Pawn Star Straight

On last nights episode of "Pawn Stars" (TV reality show) some guy wanted to sell a straight razor that he thought was made of ivory(scales) . The only markings on the razor was "made in Solingen, Germany" . The razor looked in great shape but the guy was told the scales were resin not ivory and there were many sold at that time period. The guy was expecting to sell it for $400 but only got $40 which he took. I guess real ivory is worth a lot of money.

Ha. I kinda like them both. Pawn Stars has the owner making dumb jokes after each sale which causes him to snicker. American Pickers guys are always talking about "poppin' on" things.

They are both great entertainment, but I really dislike shows like that. Every joeblow on the Bay thinks his stuff is worth a fortune when all it is is junk.

I have a general dislike for all things reality but I do try to watch Pawn Stars. It's only 30 minutes, there's almost always some (IMO) neat historical item, and the drama and cheeziness are tolerable.

They mix up the junk and the treasures. Generally they'll have one person who settles for a fraction of the asking price because their original was actually a reproduction, and another person who comes in looking for some gambling money winds up taking home a few thousand.

Must have missed the razor episode -- will have to check the DVR on that.

Back in the day Ivory was pretty common stuff as a matter of fact back in the 1930s there was this big thing about Chinese inspired furniture and home decor in the U.S. My parents had (now I have) a bunch of sold ivory carvings and such. It was cheap and plentiful then.

Ivory scales were pretty common too and razors from that period had plain thin scales and they really aren't worth that much. it's the ones with intricate carving or that have some specific history attached to them that pushes the price.
