Thread: Future shave den - any ideas ?

Hello everyone !

My basement is currently a large empty space with a concrete floor. This winter, I will build 2 rooms & a bathroom. Since I have to plan my shaves so that SWMBO can also use the bathroom, I've negotiated that she can have full control & power over the existing bathroom, and that the new modest little bathroom that will be built will be all MINE !! So basically I'll be constructing my own little shave den & I need your help.

Will just a shower, a sink and a mirror be plenty, or are there certain things that I could add during the building phase that would make my shaving experience better ?

Any kind of input would be very much appreciated.

Other things to add include a line of optics next to the sink, a fridge, a Lazyboy armchair and widescreen TV...

Seriously though, a hot water heater would be very useful so you always have a supply of really hot water. Plenty of shelving for soaps, mugs, AS etc., a hook to hang your strop on and maybe a display cabinet for your razors.

If you are keeping razors on display, line the cabinet with packs of silica gel to keep the moisture out and help prevent rust.

A towel rack with half a dozen small hand towels (for preshave hot towel treatment) would also be good.

Make sure you have a decent sized mirror so you can see your whole face clearly, and have good lighting as well.

I have seen museum cases that sit in people's extra downstairs rooms..they looks great!..all the man's razors r on display easy as pie!...imagine what the wife's girlfriends would say ;-)

One thing I really like in my bathroom is that I have one mirror in the center and 2 side mirrors set at an angle so I can see my whole face very well. I would also put in a cabinet drawer with a heater built in for my towels, but then again I am a cabinet maker. Don't forget to spend a little time focusing on where you want everything placed. I hate having to move way out of my area for a wiping towel.

You may want to consider a point of use tankless hot water heater for your sink (if you've got the $$ to spare). There are electric models, so you don't need to worry about a gas line. You could even have it drive the shower too if you put it in the right place. This would give you full control over the exact temperature of the water coming out of your bathroom sink. Some of them even come with remote controls, so you could for example set it to quite high to fill your scuttle with, and back down to 120F for the shower.

Another thing I personally would consider is I would plan out exactly where I would want to hang my strop, and then if necessary put in additional studs or cross beams in that location so I could then screw a nice looking hook exactly in the right spot and not have to worry about those stupid drywall / screw deals that never do a good enough job. Lynn mentions in his video that he likes to have the strop at a downward angle when he strops, so you should experiment with what angle you like before planning where you put any extra wood.

And finally... Make it a real man's bathroom and hook up a urinal! That will keep the wife outta your man cave.

when framing the new wall, I would use the space in between the 2by4's as a nook. You said it was small so the extra room will come in handy. Doing that would add a ton of storage space , plus have stuff on display
