Thread: Oil to preserve blades

just wondering what most of you use or would recommend as an oil to be used to coat blades between shaves? Is any oil sufficient or do some oils work better?

I like camellia oil if I'm going to oil a razor at all. For short term protection just about any oil should work reasonably well. Pick one that's easy to remove before stropping.

If by "preserve" you mean long term storage consider something like Rig Gun Grease, Boeshield or another product designed for storage of firearms or equipment. Stay away from olive oil or other similar oils as they can turn rancid.

I was told here mineral oil works good, so that is what I am using.

FWIW, I use mineral oil which seems to be working great at low cost.

Sentry Solutions TufGlide for day-to-day protection (it is a dry film preservative). Ballistol or RIG grease for longer term storage.

For price, you can't beat mineral oil, though I must say I was surprised at how in-expensive Ballistol was in the UK (ca 2.50 GBP / 50 mL). 50 mL lasts a long time

Ballistol is of course mineral oil with some added emulsifiers. I agree, mineral oil is the way to go. Nothing else can beat it for protection and price.

I use mineral oil in the form of Johnson's baby oil, works fine.
