Thanked: 9R U HiTech or LowTech?
C'mon, I think most of us must be a little strange in the eyes people who like convenience. Aren't we somewhat paradoxical?
So, is there a distinction between to be made between feeling techy versus traditional? I mean, just because this is a webforum doesn't mean the members are geeks. And just because this is about straight razors doesn't mean everybody here is a technophobe.
So which is it?

Lick (do you have a first name?).
The answer is YES! Straights, strops, fountain pens, fedora hats, 9 PDA's, 2 computers, selling cars on the internet, I like it all. Old doesn't mean bad. New doesn't mean good. We are fortunate enough to be able to combine the best of both worlds.

Im about as hi tech as they come. I am a software programmer/online marketer. I also custom build computers, and enjoy water cooling them. I also have an electronics degree. I enjoy everything tech .... I am the person whom this kind of stuff has always come to naturally.
I definantly am not getting into this for the nostalgia. I am getting into it for a better shave
My theory is most of us appreciate good products. Toyota could run an ad that says camry is better than the corvette. And there are ten different ways you could pitch that add to justify it. "Gas Mileage, etc". But in reality most people would scoff if anyone ever said the camry was better than the corvette. For us, our smarts dont just stop at cars. In my experience, with computers, cars, now starting into razors, and women. Some of the best products in the world come from companies that dont make hyped up claims. We are the people that see through the multi million dollar advertisement campains. Same for women... the best finds come when they arent marketing themselves to every tom dick and harry
To sum it up imo, we are the prove it mentality, whether we are geek, or technophobe. Furthermore as an online marketer... I believe in the next 20 years, you will see little known companies with great products move more and more into the mainstream. As more people become affluent to using the internet to research products, these companies will see increases in sales. Especially when we see the Ultra Mobile Pc's come into the mainstream. 7 inch mini computers with wireless internet. Instant messaging anywhere in the country, and being able to surf the web from anywhere as well. This means people will have a tool when they are out shopping to find some reviews on there product. Instead of just buying it ...Technology, I love it.... Now if the quantum computer would be perfected, and cold fusion...

Randy said it. Old doesn't mean bad. New doesn't mean good. I just want the BEST.

Thanked: 4I have this basic character flaw that causes me to only want to buy items of a finer quality. I know I'm odd, but what can I say?
I will wait and save to purchase something of better quality, rather than rush out and pay less for something new. I'd rather scrape pennies together until I can buy what I want that to go for instant gratification.
Even with this being said, I tend to like high tech goodies (TOYS!) as well as anyone, and I am the one that most of my friends and family call when they need help with a computer or something. It's what I do for a living.
IN spite of the mega-advertising campaigns, and the WOW factor that manufacturers want to push at us, there is the simple fact that just because it's "NEW AND IMPROVED!", doesn't mean it's better.

I'm more of a middle of the road kinda guy. I have the standard complement high tech stuff like dvd, 2 stereo systems, 2 computers (each having 2 operating systems on dual boot), an mp3 deck in my Mazda and lots of powertools. At the same time, I can spend 2 weeks without electricity/running water and all the amenities that come with'em and come out no worse for wear. (Done that on numerous occasions) I just mix and match, based on what's best for me, whether it's high tech or old school.
P.S. During "THE BLACKOUT" I just got into the Jetta I was driving, picked up my gf, a few other friends, a guitar, took out the bbq, lighter fluid, a bag of charcoal, the meat from the freezer and had a bit of a party. Coming from Eastern Europe, power blackouts don't have much of a shock-value with me

Thanked: 0I checked LOW TECH for the pole. Yes I have a laptop computer, cell phone, television, stereo, dvd, vcr and an automibile.
But the truth is that I like hand craftsmanship. I like hand made things and very much appreciate antiques. I like things made of wood, steel and stone, not plastic. I am a woodworker and do most of my work with hand tools, you know planes, chisels, hand saws, carving tools etc. I do own power tools and dont know where i would be without my bandsaw, tablesaw, drill press and joiner and some others, but I prefer hand tools for most things. I also dont like the throw away society that we live in and the environmental impact that our current lifestyle imposes.
I shave with a straight for many reasons, but what I like the most is the skill that is involved. Not only in shaving, but all aspects honing, stropping, the paraphenalia, etc. I also like the nostolgic aspect as well. I dont shave with a straight to save money. Now that I am set up maybe it will be cheaper from here on, but what i have already spent would purchase a lot of razor blades. lol

Thanked: 8I like tech stuff, sure but I'm also a traditionalist. So straight shaving doesn't get much more traditional. I also use fountain pens. I write letters and use wax seals on the envelopes etc...I'm not old fashioned at all, I like high tech toys, fast motobikes etc but I also like quality items.

Low Tech I'd say,
I use a computer but thats about it. I shave with a straight and still carry a revolver for the days when people don't agree with my point of view.

Decidedly low tech when I have a choice...straight razor, flint lock rifle and shotgun, heirlom vegetables in the garden, 150 year old house, read books...etc
...but "transistorized" by necessity in most areas of life
