Wow, what a question. I would speculate that it was a gradual transition. I wonder if barber and dental chairs evolved independently or together. Most likely the first barber chair was the rock used by Grok to shave his friend Gork with a piece of flint.

    Default barber chair

    Hello.
You are probably right in that there was a stone. but I would really like an answer from anybody. I've looked on google patents. But do not know what to count as completed barber chair, and where to set a date or whether one should allow the early chairs on four legs?

I'm not sure how early it was but I once saw a Koken made of wood IIRC. It was a long time ago. I've also seen a hot lather machine with a hand pump gizmo instead of the electric feed.

Acording to my barber books, Ernest E. Koken patented the first reclining chair in 1881.

I think I saw something about that on "pawn stars" but of course don't remember the name or date. I would think they evolved with dental chairs as the barber was a dentist back in the day IIRC.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I saw the title of this thread. A rock or a log.
