Default Barber's Notch or noise hair trimmer?

    Hi,

So I've seen a few thread here and there about the barber's notch. Mostly no one seems to have a an answer for what this is for.

In one thread someone joked, or maybe was serious, it could be used to trim noise hair. So the other day I'm looking hold my Joseph Elliot note the Barber's notch. Look at the notch look at the hair growing out of nose in the mirror. A slight pause and I had to try it. With my nostal riding the notch and the tip of the blade swept hair from the middle of my nose, the part that makes you have two nostals instead of one big hole in your face.

That is all. I did not try the other nostal or any other nose hairs.

It did not cut them down like a shave but rather cut them short.

You are a brave man, I think I'll stick to my tweezers and small scissors for those pesky nostril hairs.

    Hi,

I have since fallen back to my plan B of rounded tip nose hair scissors.

By the way, I do not recommend the barber's notch for nose hair trimming. This was only an experiment.

This is what I read somewhere.Barbers used to put a paper tissue and a apronlike sheet on a customer and when a haircut was finished, the barber would shave the back of the neck using the comb hand to lift the hair on not so short haircuts and then with the hand with the razor in it,he would push down the tissue and apron so he can shave the lower back of the neck.

I read this a few times, I'm not sure I follow. Are you saying they used the barber's notch to push down the apron to shave the lower neck area?

I read somewhere it was used to help open the razor with one hand. They would catch the notch on the edge of their pocket....

I prefer this option to using it to shave my nostril hairs!

All of the aforementioned methods are just conjecture. The reality is that it is most likely an aesthetic selling point-- it was called "hollow point" in all the marketing literature of the day.

When I was a kid barbers still did straight shaves and they trimmed nostril hairs with a scissor. Most barbers used plain old straights either round points or spikes.

I've been interested in the idea of a barber's notch being useful for trimming nose hair, and now that I've tried it a few times, I have to discredit this theory. After using several razors, it seems more logical to me to use a small razor (4/8 or smaller). The barber's notch doesn't add enough mobility/dexterity. It would seem much more useful to have a razor small enough to rotate inside of a nostril.

    ...or a pair of scissors!
