Default Good Barber/Shaver in Norfolk, VA Area?

I think my wife is trying to surprise me with finding a barber to give me a haircut and a straight razor shave. Does any one have any recommendations in the lover Virginia Norfolk area? Any to stay away from incase that is what she finds? Thanks

Well I knew what she was up too for my birthday. She got me a haircut and shave at a place called Jakes Place in Norfolk. Be nice to get a shave from some one else, hopefully a good one. I we will see.

Well Jakes was great. Was a bit disappointed as I didnt get an actually straight razor shave. It was a safety razor that had a handle like a straight razor. But still an awesome shave and great experience. I almost wanted to fall asleep with the hot towels on my face. Highly recommend them if you every want a great shave and haircut.

Apparently you can get a straight razor shave, but you have to see Jake himself since he is the only one with the license to do so. All the other gals just use the safety razor with a DE blade in it. But the rest of the shave is the same routine as I do at home with the soaps and all.

almost 90% of barbers use the shavette style razor (saftey razor in straight razor holder). This is for health reason, to prevent the spread of HIV etc. The razors are still sharp and might even get the same results or better b/c a pro is doing it for you. So barbers these days snap em in half and put them into a shavette. If barbers still used straights they would have to use autoclaves after every use, stop and have like 20 straights for the day. It's easyer to throw em out!
