Default 5/8 Revisor from John Crowley

I just my new 5/8 Revisor from John. I'll try it tomorrow morning.

John honed it, so I'll just strop it and shave.

It does not seem to be as sharp as the Geneva that I've honed on a .25mic paddle from Tony, but I think the Revisor is right and the Geneva is too sharp - I nick myself everyday with the Geneva.

If I'm right, the new Revisor from John will shave more comfortably and I'll need to take my other razors back to a similar level of sharpness.

Wht are your thoughts on sharpness?

I think there's two kinds of 'Too Sharp':

The first is the kind you might be talking about where the blade geometry is incredibly easy cutting and perhaps dangerous to some. I think this is just fine and that the problem actually lay in the user's skill level.

The second kind is the bad kind, the over smooth or wire edge where there are no cutting fins anymore. This shaves, but leads to irritation.

As they say sharp is sharp. I know others think a razor can be too sharp but personally I think the sharper the better. When people talk about over honing its like baking a cake and you over bake it and it fall in. Its not too baked its ruined. The same with razors. Its not too sharp the edge is messed up.

I think the term over honed is really bad because it makes you think you have too much or a good thing when you really ruined the edge. I prefer not to use that term and would rather just say you went from a perfectly sharp edge to a bad edge.

I have a revisor I bought from John a while back. Its a great razor and gives a great shave. Supposedly the grinding on the edge is a little different than other razors relating to the edge geometry. I don't know the specifics but I know I read it somewhere.

I just tried both razors or arm hairs, both razors just pop the hairs as soon at they touch - I'm going to look at the edges under a microscope and I'll let you know what I see.

There is a definite difference between the new razor and the ones I've put on the .25mic paddle, including the 78 Friodur I got from John, a Regilo from EdinLA, and the ebay Geneva (NOS). All of the .25mic edges are much smoother and have a cleaner (non-ragged) edge. I'll see how the shave differs tomorrow morning. Like I said earlier, I won't be surprised to find John's edge to shave better than the .25mic edge I've put on.
