Default From the AOM Blog: Five Men Who Died From Shaving

Entertaining little article posted on the AOM blog this morning. Sounds morbid, but is more a fun read than a horror story:

We take modern drugs and their wide availability for granted. One of my uncles died of septicaemia in the early nineteen-twenties, not long after stepping on nail sticking up from a plank in my grandfather's builders yard.

Not only drugs but routine vaccinations. I was in a village in Africa last month where 3 children had died of tetanus w/in the past month. The organism is ubiquitous and cuts can easily lead to infection. We vaccinated hundreds of kids for tetanus and other diseases.

Interesting read. A friend of mine told me that every year a certain (small) amount of people die from infections caused by cutting themselves while shaving. I went to Google and tried various tags but couldn't find anything. Seems it would be as likely as getting struck by lightning ?
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I noticed an article on "shaving like your grandfather" on the same page in AOM. A quick read if nothing else.

Modern folks take many things for granted. Back in the day death from disease was just a common thing. Cemeteries are full of young people who have died from various conditions like the influenza outbreak in the early 20th century. At one time people only lived into their 30s.

Ok, but what about sanitation and sterilization. I've been shaving with a SR for six months (thanks guys by the way... the best shaves in my life), but I'm concerned with sterilizing my razor after each use without damaging it

Other than rinsing and some oil I've never sterilized a razor and haven't had any problems. I think, unless you are sharing a razor with someone or store it in questionable conditions it should not be a problem however if it concerns you get some barbercide to dip the razor in. Just watch the scales.

Well, I never really gave much thought to it and I'm the only one using the razor, but after reading the article in AoM, I'm having second thoughts...

Has anyone in the forum ever suffered an infection from a SR under normal conditions (like the ones thebigspendur mentionned)

Germs don't care were they live, could be a DE or cartridge razor just as easy. I clean my straights very well every time and strop before and after every use plus soap is antiseptic. I would think the chances are very small of getting sick shaving with a straight.
