    Because while the hairs themselves may taper off toward their tips, the spaces between actually increase. We see this in the fluffy splaying out of nearly all our brushes. This has been bouncing around in my head for the last 24 hrs along with all the other loose marbles.

    Indeed, and I have seen split wood brush handles that weren't properly cared for.
