The most common and also more affordable laser engravers on the market use a CO2 laser which enables you to mark steel only with a special metal marking spray. To engrave in the steel you need a laser that uses a YAG laser which has a much shorter wavelength (1.064 microns) compared to CO2. They usually start at $30.000. Not your typical hobby laser.

Nahhhh...ya can pick up a used YAG (we call em VAG's because of there use for errr vaginal applications!) for ~5-$600
But they will take your eyes out before you even know its turned on!
You can double em up to 532nm and get a serious green laser pointer
Anyway I digress.
Slightly on topic, I have a TI Historic collection Straight that appears to be etched/lased rather then the more traditional stamped/struck logo on the tang?
Have they gone all modern on us over in France?
