Yep, most professional jewelry cleaning machines use basically ammonia. Also jewelers use it for cleaning mechanical watch movements. The Simichrome is metal polish and its a paste like maas. Windex, the kind with ammonia not vinnegar is a great substitue if you don't have straight ammonia and it has some soap in it which improves the result. Ammonia will also brighten up the carbon steel once already cleaned up but it won't take off rust or corrosion. Thats why I use it on my razors as a final cleaner.

Its a good one to go with when its the wife's turn to choose the movie and one way or another your're going to have to watch a chick-flick. This one's enjoyable.
