Thanked: 0Information on PUMA 52 Silver Steel straight razor w/ sharpening strap
I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this Puma Razor I recently purchased. It came with a sharpening sheath which holds the box quite snuggly. The box states "Lauterjung & Sohn, Solingen 0 S PUMA Vero acclalo di Sheffield". I'm not sure what the name of this sharpening strap is.
The Razor itself is Puma 52 stating Kayser Ellison & co. Best Sheffield Silver Steel. Its a straight razor & the blade is in fantastic condition.
The handle has a beautiful Puma inlay. Theres a lot of damage to the handle; I was wondering if this piece is restoreable while still keeping the original inlay.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Kayser Ellison was a company in Britain that was big in making razor steel before the war and probably for some time thereafter. Many Solingen companies, as well as British, used their steel. Even some of the Sears sta sharps are so marked on some of the boxes. I have a couple of Pumas with that steel and I believe they are pre WWII but I'm not 100% sure. Great shavers. An expert restorer can sometimes save the inlay and transfer it. I've seen it done anyhow.

Thanked: 0I was also wondering if anyone knew how much it would cost to replace the handle. As well as what the collectable price of my razor might be? I've found they can be pretty pricey on eBay but you cant always trust that site as a reliable source of information!
Thanks

Because there are so many variables relative to razors, condition, brand, what have you ..... we do not allow appraisals on SRP. As far as a rescale, check the SRP classifieds, member services, for rescaling/restoration services. Members who perform that service post there contact info there.

There are a few skilled pros here that have taken the inlay off and transferred it to new scales. That razor you have can be made to look beyond what you thought possible, but not by me lol.
As Caydel said look around and make sure you specify you want the inlay saved.
A Puma is a really sweet and sought after razor for sure and you have a beautiful candidate for resto!

Thanked: 94That is a very sweet blade.
Unfortunately the scales (handles) look to be cactus.
If the original scales are celluloid lifting the inlay is a pretty simple operation, but from the photos it looks like the scales aren't celluloid.
The leather sharpening sheath is a strop, but what you have is a very rare and unusual example of one. It also looks to be specifically made for your razor which isn't something I have seen before.
If it were me I would be looking at giving the whole kit a complete re-furb. replace the leather on the strop and sand & polish the handle, restore the blade and a new set of scales. My choice would be to try to replicate the original scales, but it's your razor.
