    Default Beau Brummels

Hi guys. I have been reading this forum since it was on yahoo, but this is my first post. I saw a beau brummels razor the other day in an antique store. The blade looked like it was in good shape, I couldn't see any pitting or chips, no major rust either. The scales are a little faded, but it still has the picture of the guy with a monacle and top hat on it. I think it has "special" written on there too. The scales are a white/ivory color, which I assume is some kind of plastic. They want $45 for it, and I was wondering if it was worth getting. I already have a dovo and a TI, so I want to know if it's worth it to have another in my rotations (I am not trying to get the disease!)

Without seeing it its hard to give advice. In general Beau brummels are made in germany so they are quality razors. The scales are probably celluloid. If the razor is in good shape the price isn't bad at all. Its just a matter of how much work you will have to put into it to make it a good shaver. Inspect the scales if they look badly faded it might mean the celluloid (which is very unstable stuff) may be starting to break down. If that's the case they will need to be replaced. You can tell if they are celluloid by smelling them, they will have kind of a vinnegar like smell, very distinctive. Plastic will have no smell.

Beau Brummel razors are excellent. They're another name used by Dubl Duck, if I remember right. I don't know if I'd fork over $45.00 for one, though, unless it was in superb condition and really caught my fancy. That's just because these razors haven't hit "cult status" and can be found for less, not necessarily because the razor isn't worth it. I'd expect it to shave as well as the Dovo.

Beau Brummel is one of the trade marks used by Bresduck (Later Pearlduck), makers of the Dubl Duck line.
