    Default Shaving stuff..not straights ?

    Hi All,

Does anyone collect shaving ephemera, not just straights. I mean stuff like grooming sets, old brushes etc..Pic attached of what I mean.

    Cheers

What's the story behind that Gary? It's interesting. I just started collecting more mugs. Nothing too serious. Trying to stay with just what I like and not get obsessive (or thinking "that's a good investment") or go broke. Which can happen with just one minty occupational mug!

    John,

Nothing special apart from the two straights..I was interested for historical sake really. I guess gentlemen would travel with these.

I thought maybe barbers made house calls at one time for a good bloodletting.

That reminds me, I was buying some old shaving mugs and the seller asked me if I was interested in a bleeding basin at a good price. That gave me a nice shake up my spine. Did I ever mention how razor blades give me shivers?

Mr. Clean, do you have contact info for the seller of the basin?

I've got old shaving ads, mugs, razors (DE and straights including a pair of prison DE's, that unlock with a long key, so the con can't use the blade for a shankin'), old barbering tools including a 3 bladed bleeder. Brushes, blades, strops hones, baber chair. Most of it's boxed up in the basement, but some is on display.

If you are ever in Columbus ohio, visit the Ed Jeffers Barber Museum there. Amazing. Hundreds of mugs, poles, chairs, razors, brushes. Everything. Chairs from the 1700's on up. Playboy has done photo shoots at his museum. He's been on the Discovery channel. All sorts of amazing stuff. He's still a barber and the museum has a licensed barber shop, though it's not hard, since he's been on the ohio board regulating barber shops for 30-40 years. And he gives a great shave with a straight. Or he did last summer.

Yeah, though there may be exceptions to the rule, they were for the most part just slick travelling cases. My grandfather used to travel a lot and had a bunch of such kits with strops, various containers and such. He'd given me a few as a kid (razors removed) but they've since gone the way of so many childhood distractions. My hamster once got stuck in the badger brush storage tube and I had to shake him out. Good times.

I've seen some very nice wooden kits as well, usually with a mirror built in to the lid's interior and a small scuttle, slot for razors and for soap. I believe these were intended for the man who may have had to shave on the fly.
