Thanked: 0New Razor
Hypothetically, if I was going to buy my first new razor and wanted to spend around 80 dollars what should I get.
I'd like something that is a little on the heavy side, easy to hone (i'm still learning this and want to hone up my new blade so the easier the better), and gives really awesome shaves.
Any recs?

Thanked: 0Will I notice a difference in shave quality from the Griffon or Shumate I got from Joe and Lynn respectively? Or will the shave quality be the same with a new razor in my price range? Also would I possibly get a better shaver by spending the money on another 'better' razor from bill, lynn, or joe?
Thanks,
John

John,
Try to find a 6/8 if you want a little more weight. I am sure one of the guys will have a nicely honed 6/8 around if not go for the 6/8 Dovo or TI and have it honed by Lynn.

Keep in mind that price and reputation are only roughly correlated with "better shaver". Wonderedges had neither price nor reputation until lynn blabbed, but they were always great shavers. Same for W&B wedges, and the same for Geneva/Genco. You must find your own way, grasshopper.

Thanked: 346I got one of those 8/8 friodurs as my second razor. They take an incredible edge and are fairly easy to hone (for a stainless) because they blade is so wide there's more margin for error in your technique. They are awfully big though with the full hollow grind they're not so heavy as the big 8/8 W&B's.

I have had a few of those monster Friodurs and sold them for a while too. I loved mine as did my customers. Nice razors and reasonable priced.

Thanked: 79I think you're fine with that 6/8" + friodur.
Barring that, my favorite $80 razor is a 6/8 Dovo Bismarck.....wonderful razor, shaves so nice it aught to be cheating.

I'll second a 6/8 Bismarck. Among the finest shavers I've owned. I actually have one on my site (http://shop.writerferret.com) That one was actually honed by Lynn, and used twice. It was one of my benchmarks when I started honing. It isn't nearly mint, but not much wear, and an awesome shaver.
