Looking for storage for straight razors. Anyone have any opinion or currently use a roll? (Gary I'm especially looking for your input.)

damn, that's really nice. For only $7, next time I'm at lee valley I think I'll pick one up.
Good find!!
Lynn
Do you have one of these? I'm wondering if the compartments are big enough for a razor.Quote:

That is an amazing idea. Something simple you can possibly make as well. I would not mind looking for some fabric and making my own for travelling. But I would have oneo r two spots for razors, while it has alternate spots for your brush and maybe a cry soap cake and brush to be placed in.
????? I've been using rolls for a long time, now. I've got three very large rolls with about 80 compartments each and I've got two shaving rolls, one holding ten and one holding 8 razors. Those are my regular shavers.
Rolls are very easy to make for anyone so inclined. Canvas or denim works fine.
True. When I cut old jeans into shorts, I sometimes make the legs into "rolls" for bike tools and the like. Cut large rectangles, set on the table with a long edge closest to you. Pick up that edge and fold it upward, not quite meeting the upper long edge (leave an inch or two). Sew the sides and a series of vertical lines, creating a row of pockets.Quote:

Joe I read that leather may be bad for the razor (I'm assuming the scales) due to "acids". I'll try to find out where I read it. I think a straight razor book. Anyone else heard that?Quote:

Gary
Just saw this lot on ebay #160026911979 that come with an impressive box
I restored an old Rimu cupboard from a recyclers and fitted a sloping shelf with slots to hold the razors.
The second pic shows the idea quite well. I removed some razors so you can see more clearly.
Another idea is just to convert a wooden box, in the 3rd pic it's an old fountain pen box which now holds 7 razors.
Gary
I was perusing through my lee valley catalog and came across this roll as well. Looks like it'd be a good fit.
You can also checkout the page with all their tool rolls.
Very nice Gary. It did say the pen roll fit "larger" pens but I guess that's relative. Maybe my wife could make me something. Course then she'll know exactly how many razors I've purchased recently.
Thanks Toxik for the other rolls. I did a google on pen rolls so I missed that. Would new canvas be too rough? I guess that is why Gary recommends lining it.
Gary, I'm not not that great in the workshop so I bought a small cabinet on Ebay for the bathroom I've taken over. Item 250021255343 I can't believe I got it at that price! It was a whim. But of course the shipping brings it to $171 and I wasn't happy with the seller's feedback. I'll see what happens. I couldn't get an unfinished pine cabinet for less than $140!
John
These are old photo's, but it's what I use to store my razors....
It's a wooden machinests box. Gerstner makes some NICE high end versions of this...this one is a 'cheap' copy of a gerstner box, but it's all wood, and works great. I had to add the slotted holders....
C utz
OH! and if anyone is interested, I also have this.......
It will hold 6 razors (even chopper size). There is a leather flap that comes over, but it did not fit on the scanner view, and the holder folds in half. I think it was made originally for scissors. I got it on eBay a while back for $10. If anyone wants it for $10, PM or email me at: taztu at hotmail

Wow! I've been looking for something like this. Thanks for the idea C.Quote:

Thanks!
The best part is, the tray in the front flips up, and locks closed when the lid is clipped down. Then you can lock it shut, so curious fingers will stay out!
I tried to keep my razor collection down to only what would fit in the box, however, if you notice in the one picture I made 3 additional slotted trays to fit in the top section, so I could expand my collection....DAMN this addiction!

I've been looking at the "Gerstner International" boxes made by Gerstner but not as expensive and I'm assuming not the same quality as the American version. Found one 10 drawer on Amazon.com for $229 (model GI-532), ships free, and they are offering $25 off during September! So that's $204! An ebay authorized Gerstner dealer is selling the 8 drawer model (GI-530) for $194.99.
Note: Amazon's picture of GI-532 is WRONG. The description is for the 10 drawer GI-532 but the pic is the 8 drawer GI-530.
I have a Gerstner International and it is a fine box. A few of the machinists at work have the USA Gerstners and this stands up well next to it. Harbor Freight also has a wooden machinist box for around $100. It is made a bit cheaper but does well too. I have one in the shop and am pleased for the price.
Tony
Oddly enough, I received a sales flyer from Harbor Freight on Saturday, and
one of the 8-Drawer chests they carry is on sale for $69.99. This one is
listed as an 8 Drawer Tool Chest, and the one Tony mentions is listed
as an 8 Drawer Machinist's Chest. Both look very similar except for the
color of the felt liner.
They also have a 6 Drawer Ash Tool Chest that looks very servicible
complete with side handles which the 8 drawer chest do not have.
To bad I only have three razors so even it would be a little barren,
but it is a nice looking chest so who knows.....future expansion and
all that.
Here 'ya go...

I don't think Pacific Silvercloth would be the best fabric to use for this purpose as the brown dye in the fabric could stain some of the more absorbent handle materials, and it would not protect against moisture. Have you seen anything similar in the past, and if so, what type of material/fabric was used? It would not be difficult for us to make the roll out of a different fabric.
Also, if you're interested, we can have the rolls embroidered with your name or some other identifying wording. I'll be glad to put a quote together for you. Let me know what type of fabric you might want, if you would be interested in embroidery, and if putting 10 per roll would work for you."
I may ask her if her fabric supplier could suggest something. Any of you razor gurus have any feedback? The size of a slot is 1.25"x7". Is that okay? (1.25" wide enough? I don't know what the max diameter of an object to fit in a slot could be.) Also embroidery of names or Straightrazorplace or ...

1.25" would be fine for your medium to smaller razors (perhaps up to 6/8" would fit). Your larger 'chopper' type razors are a bit widder and would not fit, or would be VERY tight (you don't want to warp the scales, and force it in). Also, 7" long would hold most razors. I know that the longer razors (i.e. Maestro razors) would not fit.Quote:

does anyone have any other links for boxes like the gerstner boxes that are cheaper and can hold several razors as well as some space for mugs etc. It doesnt have to be great quality, just something nice enough that the wife wont consider it an eye sore. She gets mad enough about what I spend on razors, the last think she wants to see is me spending lots of money for something to keep the razors in lol! Im talking like under $60.00...:(
Josh you are going to have to learn to be sneakier...:roflmaoQuote:

WB Rich. You're absolutely correct and welcome back... Just squirrel 5 bucks here, 10 bucks there, and once you have enough hard cash, get your boss' approval to use the company credit card and hand them the cash. They can write it off as a gift for a client, you get a nice storage item and the wife will never know. A win-win-win situation :D
OR, do what I do.
Sell some razors you have to buy more. I'm sure you have enough now to sell, and buy? If you want to make a little more than what you put in, clean 'em up and hone them.
Unfortunately, the wife is starting to tap into this... I'm getting, "Op! We need to get or pay for this, looks like you need to sell off some razors!" I just recently encountered this this week. The animals need vet work, and well, this weekend I'll be listing some nice razors, and a week set! (It's a heafty vet bill :( ) At this rate, I better hide a few of my best shavers, because when we start kicking out kids, that razor liquidation is going to happen fast.
On second thought, If you love your razors, don't do what I do!
C utz
LOL I just traded my last razor that I would ever part with. The rest are the ones I love and couldnt bear to live without. I have a small collection, but they are:
1. 8/8 workedback henckels Friodur with plexi scales by Gary
2. 9/8 1840 wedge with Robert Williams girraffe bone scales
3. 7/8 1900's Bill Ellis wedge with desert ironwood scales w/CA treatment
4. 8/8 Friodur with blue mosiac scales
5. 8/8 J. Smith Wedge with Joe Chandler Cocobolo scales
6. Something very special in the works from Bill Ellis for my Christmas gift from the wife :)
I think I am forgetting one razor...but thats everything else....
So see I cant part with any of them!!! EVER!!!! :bow :bow
WOW, I admire how small you collection is!
I have tried to acheive that level of necessity for quite a long time. I keep falling off that damn wagon though! (Thus the need for such a large box).
One thing you might want to concider is a nice wooden cigar box. 'Torano' even comes with slotted trays sometimes....
C utz
well I like the idea of something that can hold all my shaving stuff a few brushes a few mugs and a bunch of razors, as I am sure my collection will slowly grow.
I also want something that is solid and heavy enough to protect them from being knocked off a dressor when banged into by a person or a cat. I cigar box would get destroyed in my house lol, plus remember my smallest razor is an 8/8 they tend to take up a lot of room.
How about one of these for travelling? Being watertight maybe not ideal for daily use, but you can't get much stronger.
http://www.pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1060
Those look similar to cigar travel cases I've seen. Good idea.
The following is a cut and paste from a post I put on shavemyface.com. I meant to paste it here earlier but forgot till I saw Iwan beat me to mentioning Pelicans:
These waterproof pelican cases are made to keep your camera, mp3 players, flash memory cards, guns, etc safe.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...4_12878994.jpg
But if you put your shaving stuff, and/or travel tubes inside, it will keep the clothes in your luggage safe. Line it with paper towel, napkins, kleenex to catch drips.
Probably not great for a shaving brush though, unless the brush dries first.
you can see various sizes of 'micro' cases
here, or go to the home page for big cases as well.
I bought mine at Fry's electronics. I think they are cheaper at Frys too.
OtterBox makes similar waterproof cases, including for cigars
http://www.otterbox.com/products/ott...1000/index.htm
And for you straight razor using underwater campers..
...get your fully submergable waterproof dufflebag here
This may be of use for European folks. I just ordered a 6 pocket canvas tool roll from a company in Germany. The delivery is a little pricy but it looks ideal for keeping a small collection safe, also being canvas it won't trap moisture inside with the razors like a plastic case might.
