Shave Obsessed Friends, I Need Your Help
I start barber college in two weeks. I hope to be opening my own shop in my hometown within 18 months; it is a 15 month course. There are only a handful of barbers in my town and most are at retirement age. I want to open a traditional shop offering straight razor shaves. None of the shops in town offer anything more than a haircut for $10. I'd like to provide a little more service. I've just started a conversation on my Facebook page, and all of my "friends" are potential customers or know someone who could be. If you'd care to join in the conversation and educate some non-shave enthusiasts and people who don't really think about the barber experience the way we do, here's the link: Jeremy Williams | Facebook
Send me a friend request if you will, just include a note. Thank you in advance to anyone that will join in.

Thanked: 1936I spoke with my old barber who is close to retirement age about straight shaves & he mentioned that he quit giving shaves as it wasn't something that $$ could be made on. He said he could cut 2-3 men's hair in the same time it took to give one shave. You may have to price accordingly to your time invested. Good to hear that you are planning on keeping a long old tradition alive.

most shops I've found online that offer shaves usually charge about twice as much the cost of a haircut or thereabouts for a shave. I had read that it was a time issue. I just know that I would like to have the option, and I know that men like myself would often be willing to pay for that opportunity.

You also have to check the state laws. Most states don't permit the use of a straight. Probably a disposable blade is what you'll have to use.

Looks like Mississippi requires disposable blades. The ones they issued us a school are horrible. Im looking at a Feather Artist Club; would love some feedback.

The Feather Artist Club is quite fantastic, check out the SS model, it's the most "friendly" version: Straight Razors - Feather Artist Club - Traditional Shaving
I also have a thread about mine here: http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...tml?highlight=

So my friend got married back in august and we headed to the local barber shop for a Shavette shave that he only does by appointment and charges a huge premium for this specialized service. The pampering part was really good and very relaxing. I had brought one of my razors ready to go for him to use on me. I must say the shave was pretty good (I think i do better, but i also know the way my hair grows on my face so i get extremely close) And we got a picture with the shavette to our throat.
If you did it by appointment for guys getting married etc, and charge accordingly ( 1 shave = 3 hair cuts ) I dont think $30 is unreasonable.
