A question from my wife
Hi ladies. My good lady wife has been suffering from razor burn. She was using a mega blade thing.I offered to do her legs with a straight and the results have been great.I have flat refused to do her underarms and privates with a straight though. We can get double edge wilkinson sword blades here but the razors to use them are really bad cheap things.Any recommendations for a good quality shaver that takes DE blades. Thanks in advance.

Thanked: 2591yoi can check amazon for Merkur, they are made by DOVO I think and are very nice razors.
There are also Parker and maybe some others current production DE . Vintage ones to look for would be Gillette, those can be found on e-bay, and more DE oriented shaving forums in the classifieds. IMHO Merkur will do the job great for 25-50 usd depending on what you are looking to buy.Stefan

If she wants to go DE then I recommend scouring the bay for a Gillette Slim or fatboy. The adjustable settings make them quite nice. Can usually be found for 30-50 bucks. A Gillette tech is nice, too but gives a mild shave which may be good to learn with but as she gets used to it it Kay no longer be satisfactory. If she wants to go with a straight type thing, the Dovo Shavette is the best option as you're using a DE blade snapped in half.
Also, IME, the Wilkinson sword blades, while sharp, are not smooth. Sally beauty supply sells some Israeli Personna de blades that are maybe .50c more a pack than the Wilkinson sword blades and are definitely smoother.

I have tried several different types of blades and wilkinson sword blades are some of the worst I have used(gave all mine away) I like the red personas and the yellow 7 o clocks. You may find it easier to order a razor and a sample pack of different kinds of blades. She will very quickly find out her favorite types. I like the adjustable razors you have much more control. But I still think my little straight my husband got me gives me the best shave and shaving my under arms is rarely done by me. Gerrit almost always gives me a straight shave.

JohnnyHoodoo,
Please have a peek here for safety razors : Safety Razors
and here for blades : Razor Blades - Double & Single Edge & Injector Sensor Excel, Mach3, Fx Diamond & Xtreme 3
Of the new build razors, the Muhles are, for me, very nice razors (I have an R41 & a R109).
Mr Mayhew of ConnaughtShaving is a very fine chap to do business with
Have fun !
Best regards

Thanked: 17Go to one of the many supporting vendors and order a blade sampler pack. The blade really does make a huge difference. Red Personas are my favorite.
As for razors, I'm a big fan of the classic Gillettes. One of the slims is a great choice since it is adjustable. You can find them at local antiques stores, in the Buy/sell/trade section of most shaving forums, or on Ebay (beware, ebay can get quite pricey.)
My wife has asked about me shaving her legs and such, just haven't had a chance yet. She won't even consider the straight but I've got a DE and blades lined up, just waiting for the time.

Thanks to all who replied. My wife is now looking at Merkur razors (feather are too expensive) with a thought for trying various blades.I shaved her legs tonight with my "gotta" straight and she was thrilled as to how close the shave was.I am trying to ban those pesky Wilkinson Sword blades that are the norm here in Scotland.I must admit I tried them myself years ago after being fed up with the "multiblade" thing.I never realized that all these quality DE blades were available until I had broadband and Signed up here.Looks like she fancies "feather" blades.I know they are ninja but I have a feather touch when shaving. What do you gals think?

Out of curiosity: why not the underarms with a straight?

Thanked: 1185My bride uses a 3 piece Gillette Tech with Personna blades from Sally's. Works like a champ. She fears the straight however.
