I have one stone, but half a dozen hones

Ah, a trick question! The number of hones one has is irrelevant to whether one has a disorder compelling one to acquire them.

My favorite hone is my chromium oxide-finished linen strop from Tony Miller. My most expansive hone was a King 6k. It sucked up water like a wet-vac. My best finishing hone was an Escher with a reddish label

    Lets answer it like this

I'm still fairly new with all of this but i have been getting to to it fast but I wanted to know....

    1) How many hones do you have?
Lets just call this number A, A here is the variable and differs for every user here.

    2) How many do you need until you can say have hone acquisition disorder?
Simple that would be A+1 because the amount you have is just okay 1 more is being obsessive

    3) How many is too many?
    A+10

It goes without saying that A changes after each purchase

what i'm saying here is does it count as HAD when we're talking about an expert who can get the very best out of the individual types of hone? am not defending or attacking, just wondering what the opinion is?

I am down to a bit over 20, having sold off many. At one time it was over 60. I'm counting barber hones too. Discounting synthetics I think it is easy to become infatuated with naturals. Whether Escher/Thuringans or coticules there are nuances between stones in both performance and appearance. Bring in the J-nats and it is a whole other realm of uniqueness. Since I'm too old to collect women anymore ... the same in that their are characteristic differences in performance and appearance .... I am relegated to finding solace in sharpening stones, razors and shaving brushes.

At the moment, I've got 11 (5 Shapton Ceramic Pro, 3 coticules, 2 JNATS and a Frankonian) and 2 DMT Duo plates. I used to have a few more but I'm pretty happy with my current lot.

I reckon I got what I need now, but in honesty, not much more.
Then again, defining need is perhaps the most tricky part..
