Thanked: 2What's your travelling shave setup?
Seeing as I now class myself as a straight shaver (not used a cartridge for about a month!) I was wondering what you long-timers would use when travelling. I've got 3 scenarios to deal with this year:
1) A fortnight abroad so I'll have to adhere to the airlines safe luggage restrictions (i.e. don't carry the blade in hand luggage!)
2) A long weekend camping on a site with all amenities
3) A week in Ireland at a cottage
My total inventory so far is 1 straight razor, 1 soap jug (ceramic, not great for planes), 1 shave stick, 1 brush, 1 styptic pencil and 1 hanging strop.

Depends... Two weeks trips i will bring two straights, a Theirs travel strop and a stick of Ogallala. A three to four days I bring one razor and hand strop with a stick of SC. A over night I bring a Fat boy DE.

Well, depends on how, where and why i am traveling.
When it is a well planned trip involving flights: i overnight (fedex) the razor usually a stainless one that can be replaced, a shavemac variably length brush, a soap in a resealable plastic tub and strop, to either my hotel or the office where i am going to. obviously call them in advance and let them know you are doing it.
by car or train on business: basically the same but i might bring a nicer razor.
someplaces i go to often enough that i just leave stuff there or in the safe keeping of a friend or relative near my destination. i have always been wary of putting good things in checked luggage; more than once i arrived but my luggage was a day or two late.
that said in my dopp bag i keep a 6x2 inch coticule in case the need arises.
i hate to admit it, but internationally i just bring a merker DE without blades, they are easy to find in most countries. thank all that is holy i only leave the US once every 5 years or so.
jimBe just and fear not.

Thanked: 983Forget the jug, face lather instead. Carry the razor in the checked luggage for trips abroad, but keep it with your other toiletrys so that customs can see that you're not a mad slasher or whatever else their retarded little minds can imagine one being used for. Be prepared to lose it by theft from baggage handlers. It isn't likely, but it may happen. What I am saying is, don't pack your favourite razor for overseas trips.
Camping (with amenities) and cottage living should be a breeze to handle. I often shave open air with just my strop, razor, brush, and a tin washbasin filled with cold water from the bore (that water is hard as a druggy tripping on viagra, I have to say), I get along just fine. I use a mirror in this situation too, when the breeze isn't too much. It's just a little 2"x4" thing that I hang off a peice of baling twine.
You might need to be a little creative when deciding to hang the strop. Depending on how it is designed to fasten on, I would add a bit of decent cord/leather lace/shoe lace to tie it off on the most likely looking object, probably a sink tap if there is nothing else available, just take some care with regards splashed water and knocking the razor.
You should be able to come up with what is needed once your on location. You could even just pre-strop by attaching to your tent pole, before making your way to the shower block.

If I'm checking bags (very rear) I take my str8 (inside the shoe, with socks inside), a paddle strop, boar or horse hair brush to attack soaps with hard water.
If I'm going through security with no check bag ( most of the time), I take my merkur DE with one fresh blade in the razor and one extra with the toiletry kit. So far I haven't had the blades taken out, but I'm ready for it anytime now. Also take the same brush and soap set. I also have some cream on a very small container, just in case the water is too hard.
I agree with the other poster that you can find DE blades almost anywhere in the world.
For camping in a cabin, the same as when I'm driving. Hanging strop, the str8 and even a travel scuttle. However, when backpacking or kayaking, I take nothing.
Hope that helps. Double O

Thanked: 2Cheers all! I've got my eye out for a travel strop. The DE is out, I don't own one, nor do I wish to!
Big thanks to you at srp!

Unless you have business meetings to attend during those 3 outings, they all sound like a great time to grow out the beard, only to enjoy the act of shearing it off with your straight when you get home. As for your disparaging thoughts on a DE, they come in very handy when you 've overslept and need to shave but don't have time for a proper full straight shave.
Why doesn't the taco truck drive around the neighborhood selling tacos & margaritas???
