Traveling with straight razor gear?
So I recently got hooked on SR shaving, my question is... What do you guys do when traveling (by air)? I know I need to pack my SR in my checked luggage, do you guys bring enough razors for the trip (already stropped), or do you pack a strop. If packing a strop, what kind do find packs best in a bag? Also, do you use a travel brush or get creative packing your favorite?
I know its a lot of question but unfortunately spend almost half the year traveling for work (spread out in 2-5 day trips).
Thanks!

Thanked: 194you will get alot of different responses. I personally use a shavette when I travel because I couldnt stand the thought of any of my razors being lost or damaged! as for a strop. I dont think it really matters what you take. Im sure all will fit in a bag. I use a simpsons travel brush and a wilkinson or speick shave stick

Thanked: 3I'm quite interested in twisting the TSA's silly rules for my own benefit, as I am wanting to pack lightly for an upcoming weekend flight. It really sucks, because no matter what razor I take, I'd have to pack it away in checked luggage, unless I brought my DE and bought a pack of blades there. I really don't want to end up checking my luggage just because of my razor. Two nights worth of clothes does not need to go into checked luggage!

I've got my Parker disposable blade and used to like it, but since I picked up a Dovo Best I can't seem to get used to using the Parker again. I'll toss it in its case and hope it doesn't get stolen. Was thinking about a paddle strop since it won't flop around and possibly fold up funny during TSA "handling" lol.
Can you imagine the look going through a security checkpoint with a SR? I was packing my DE and picking up blades when I arrived, until one trip it took me 2 hour of searching for blades and I ended up having to buy a cartridge razor for 4 days use that ended that method.

I have a miniture paddle strop for travel. Before that I used to strop on my wallet. A 2-5 day travel wouldn't require me to do any stropping at all. A single blade does me just fine for several days. I wouldn't shave everyday on a vacation, but I would have to for work.
A DE razor is nice for travel too. I will sometimes throw a disposable cartridge blade in the bag too, just in case I have trouble with my straight. I like to put a rubber band around a straight when I travel and place it into a hard container. Luggage gets thrown around quite a bit.

Alan, what kind of wallet, bi fold or traditional breast pocket variety?

Thanked: 40I picked up a couple of inexpensive razors on ebay. After I honed them to shave ready sharp, I only use these when traveling. If the razors get lost or stolen I'm not out too much. A nice travel strop and coffee mug with soap and I'm good to go.

Thanked: 3How about a Gold Dollar for travel? If you can get it to hold an edge, that is.

Thanked: 983If you can't or won't check your luggage, you might just have to resign yourself to a DE (not that that is a bad thing of course) and buy blades at the destination if need be. Otherwise if you check luggage, just pack the basics, razor, strop, brush and shave soap/cream. I use my own homemade strop as 'roo hide is nice and thin and doesn't tend to crease like other leather does. Maybe look at getting a 'roo hide strop from SRD for travel purposes. I just pack the bits and pieces that I usually use (Brush, cream, strop), although I generally choose my ugliest razor.
