What a day I had
And 43 years to the day I had my first straight shave. Woke up this morning and I knew it was going to be different for a straight razor was waiting for me. I made the coffee, took a shower and began to prep. I was so pumped it was hard to do anything. I was going over everything I had read as I was whipping up the lather, but that is when I just told myself just let it happen. Just like in the Army training will take over. First pass was great what a feeling of that blade on your face mowing down whiskers. Rinse and then relather for 2nd pass. This time across the grain, a couple of weepers no big thing, I expected this to happen. I used my left hand because I want to learn that way using both hands to shave. I just trusted my hands. Every now and then I would catch myself doing a DE move instead of a more wristy straight move. Being that it was my first shave I stopped at two passes and I was happy to noticed I was almost BBS. There were a couple of spots I had to used my left hand to go over in a hard spot so I did not risk it. I used my DE to finish up that spot. A man ought to know his limitations. Then I was BBS on my first shave. I am hooked!!!
It almost seems silly that I make such a big deal about shaving, but it is a big deal to shave with a straight. An accomplishment in my book and a day I will never forget. I am the only one in my family to have done this by their own hands. But to have done this on my birthday is just the icing on the cake!!!
Thank you all for the plethora of information for this is what made it possible. Today I became a well shaved gentleman. Best birthday present in many years!!!

It's not silly to make a big deal about it! After all, in the real world outside the forum, how many straight razor shavers do you know?
Sounds like an excellent first outing, and it only gets better. Way to go!

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself Raf. Don't worry you're not the only one. Quite a few of us get THAT excited over shaving. The downside is that you'll develop a major case of RAD soon

Congratulations!
If you're like me you'll find that your results improve a lot over the next week or two as you practice the finer points and become more confident with the left hand.
P.S. The rest of us get excited about it too, shaving has become one of the best parts of the day for me.Last edited by DMS; 11-10-2006 at 11:26 PM.

On that note, I started exclusively right-handed but now I'm having no trouble transitioning to two-handed shaving.

Just keep at it and your skills will improve so fast it will amaze you. Before you know it you'll be giving advice to people and you'll be a blabbermouth.
