Veteran's Day
To all you Veterans..........
Thank You!!!
I spent part of Friday sending a "Happy Birthday Marine" to one of my
brother-in-laws,and asked my sister to have him a piece of cake this
evening. One of those Marine traditions that I pray will never stop.
He served in Vietnam as a tunnel-rat sometime around '66-67 while
I was still in high school. I was an MP in the 179th Military Police Battalion
in the early '70's. I lost several friends in Vietnam, and am grateful to have
known them.
I am grateful our nation has turned away from some of the attitudes that
existed during my time in service. It brings joy to me when I see service
men and women greeted on airports, and the genuine thanks and good
will expressed to them, but I remember when it wasn't so, and I'm sure
one or two of you remember as well....
Today, I pray for God's blessings on all veterans and their families, past
and future, and thank them for the selfless service they have given which
allows us all to live the lives we do. For all you here, you have my gratitude.
I read a article today on the mil-blog "Mudville Gazette" that was written
by Robert Stokley of Loganville, Ga. Robert lost his son Mike earlier this year.
His column explains better than I , "The Cost of Freedom", and serves as a
reminder to us all the debt we all owe our military, and their families. I live
not far from Loganville, and when Mike returned home for burial, traffic in
parts of the Atlanta area basically came to a halt to allow his body's transport
to proceed without delay. Huge crowds lined the highways as people came
and lined the route in his honor. An earlier column about "Mike" can be accessed
at "Mudville Gazette" that was also written by his father.
Please take a few minutes today to attend a parade, thank a veteran, and
read the two columns by Robert Stokley.
Tell your children and grandchildren what these folks do for us.
Never forget!

I guess people are more educated these days and not blaming the soldiers for the fights that the politicians are starting. Most soldiers join up out of true patriotism. In 'Nam they were also conscripted. Whatever happened, they were worthy of respect and did not deserve the treatment they received then and that some receive now. Their sacrifice should be received with gratitude and respect. Any anger and derison should be aimed at the politicians.

The sacrifices that soldiers and their families make are truly humbling. I get to sleep soundly at night because there are men and women all over the world who say "nothing's going to happen to you tonight, not on my watch". I agree with Marcus about how wonderful it is to see the troops greeted positively. I am amazed that whenever I say thank you to one of them, they have a genuine gratefulness that I would acknowledge them. Many seem almost embarassed to have the attention paid to them.
From my family to our veterans (US and Allied) - Thank you!!!

I got to march in a Veterans day parade in my dress blues here in town where I am at. There was 36 of us total plus chief. There wasn't a HUGE crowd but a good turn out for a small town. It was something I won't forget for a while because as we marched people would stand or if standing begin to clap or yell "Thank You NAVY" or simply "Thank You!" as we passed by. It was a great day. I got a little chocked up by it.
Also while I was being flown to my A school I had some people to say thanks for my service even though I am just getting started and others out there have done much more than me, but it feels good that people do realize and appreciate the military.
As said before by steve, I actually feel a bit embarrased and don't know what to say back but your welcome. The thanks do help.
Even though I am late on this thread I want to say thanks to any past Veterans and those currently serving.Last edited by pitbulls20; 11-17-2006 at 01:00 AM.
