Thread: Visiting NYC? Some places to check out

I live in Brooklyn, NY and work in Manhattan and have been wet shaving for a few months now. Like all of you, I have become addicted to this hobby of ours. So I thought I could provide a list of places to check out if you should be visiting or are from the local area. By no means is this list complete, but feel free to add to my list of must-see places. I have also given some sample prices of the same items so that you can judge prices.

My favorite - Pasteur Pharmacy 53 East 34th St. (Between Park and Madison)
This is an old school pharmacy with almost 20 feet of shaving related items. They carry a large selection of DR Harris, Trumpers, Taylor of Old Bond St, Simpson Brushes, the full collection of Irish Moos, Prorasso, Penhaligion, RazoRock and many other brands. They even carry some Dovo razors hanging across from the shave soaps. The aisle is very tight and there is a lot of traffic passing through, but if you want it, this is the place to go. Sample prices - Trumper's Skin Food 100ml - $28; DR Harris's Arlington Shave Soap (in bowl) - $32.99

Pasteur Pharmacy - 806 Lexington Ave (Between 62nd and 63rd Streets)
Same owner, same selection, same tight aisles. The prices here are a little more (probably due to the higher rents in the area). Trumper's Skin Food 100ml - $30; DR Harris's Arlington Shave Soap (in bowl) - $35

Cambridge Chemists - 855 Lexington Avenue (Between 64th and 65th Streets)
Nice little place, but seems to be a shadow of it's former self, with regards to wet-shaving products. The shelves were very light and it seemed there were only one or two of each item. They carry a minimal amount of Penhaligon, Trumpers and DR Harris. They do carry a significant amount of Czech & SpeakeThe store is 2 blocks away from Pasteurs on Lexington Avenue, so definitely worth stopping in. Trumper's Skin Food 100ml - $29.50; DR Harris's Arlington Shave Soap (in bowl) - $48

New London Pharmacy - 246 8th Avenue (Between 22nd and 23rd Streets)
Definitely a lady's place to shop (maybe trick the SWMBO) into entering the shop. Not a lot in terms of wet-shaving products, but they do carry the full line of Prorasso if you are looking for something simple and elegant. Also a minimal amount of Trumpers and DR Harris. Trumper's Skin Food 100ml - $30; DR Harris's Arlington Shave Soap (in bowl) - $40

NY Shaving Company - 202B Elizabeth Street
Great Tonsorial Parlor! Head on in for a shave, haircut or just to peruse the branded NY Shaving Company Products. They carry many different scents of creams, soaps, pre-shave oils, toners and brushes. The owner's a good guy and easy to talk to about wet shaving. The prices are reasonable for good products.

There are also a few places I have yet to visit which I will list here.

CO Bigelow - 414 6th Avenue (off of W9th Street)
Whitney Chemists - 50 University Place (between E9th and E 10th Streets)
Clyde Chemists - 926 Madison Ave (off of E76th Street)
The Art of Shaving - there are a few of the chain stores here in NYC, but not all offer shaves.

Thanks for the list I should be able to check out the Pasteur on 34th next time I'm in NY. I always seem to end up in midtown at least some of the time. Or Whitney if I'm downtown hitting John's Pizza or Little Italy. Or possibly the one on Lex that's not far from the Metropolitan.

Nothing in Brooklyn? I would have thought the hipsters in Williamsburgh would have attracted a high end full service barber or shave shop by now.

So, in the past few weeks, I have visited some of the above and wanted to update you all;
CO Bigelow - Very Nice place, has their products spread out by brand, so it is a bit daunting. Great, full selection of their private label stuff and Acqua di Parma. Moderate amount of Trumpers and DR Harris.

Whitney Chemist - Maybe they are a shade of what they used to be, but this tiny old school pharmacy has nothing more than some pucks of William's Shave Soap.

I may be visiting New York soon and although I have been once before, albeit briefly, I find this post extremely useful. I'll probably be in Astoria, so is the best way to get around the 'subway'?

Also, is the Creed Boutique easy to get to? Probably not so 'wet shaving' but some great fragrances none the less!

In Astoria, you will probably be close to the "N" train. Take that to the 34th Street in Manhattan,Pasteur's Pharmacy is a 4 block walk.

Creed is onMadison Avenue and 64th Street. If you take the same train and get off on Lexington Avenue, you will be on 59thand Lex. Creed is about a 15 minute walk from there.

My newest den of shaving wonderment is Metalliferous on W.46th St near the diamond district. Kind of like HD except for jewlers and craft people. They have everything for buffing, shining, measuring, polishing, hammering, etc. The sales people carry digital calipers in their pockets.

And it's three blocks from work.

"You want a 4 oz. peening hammer and want to see which one has the smoothest surface on the peen? Come behind the counter and go through the ones hanging up til you find one you like."

That kind of hardware store.
