That's why you don't look at the paste color but at the particle size. As for the cutting medium, I'm not too sure about balsa. I know that water can raise the grain of the wood so you MIGHT be better off using an oil base. However don't take my word for it as I've never worked with balsa. Wait for someone who knows better to chime in lol.
