Thanked: 0Finally found a razor!! Need honing advice
First off I'd like to say thanks to everyone who helped out in the marketplace section in regards to helping me choose a new razor/strop. I ended up having to pass on Alex's Bengal sadly as I was having some problems with the company I am working with. We have found some new investors and everything seems to be back on track alot faster than I had thought
So finally it looks like I can afford a razor! A new Hamburg Ring fell into my lap at a good price here in Vancouver, Canada much to my suprise. What are peoples thoughts/opinion on this razor?? The question now is how do I get it honed, I'm not sure of anything in BC, so maybe sending it to one of the hone masters on this forum would be the wisest idea?
As for future purchases, I am thinking the top notch strop from well shaved gentleman would be the smartest bet with the practice strop for beginners. I am also thinking the 2 sided paddle strop would be a smart purchase to keep the time between honings down. Maybe a new Vulfix 2236 but thats another story.
Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated,
Mark

You may also want to get a vintage razor and a hone. The honemeister-honed blade will be your benchmark for the $10 e-bay piece. I honed an HR once but I didn't get it to shave as well as I'd like. Now I want to take it to my new bench hone and see if that'll do the trick. It did wonders for the other blades in my rotation.

Thanked: 0Firestart,
Alex actually provided me with a old razor thats alittle rough around the edges for a good price, actually free , Thanks Alex. So that might be a great razor to practice honing on. The razor is a Solingen Cowboy and is in transit, so maybe I should keep my eyes open for some hones too. One step at a time I guess, I should shave with straight a couple times first before I break the bank

Mark, if you enjoy it half as much as I did, you'll be running off to Lee Valley and getting yourself a Norton. You have one in Vancouver:
1180 S.E. Marine Drive (604) 261-2262
By Knight St. Bridge Fax: (604) 261-8856
With tax, it will run you about a brownie. However I strongly recommend getting a good fine finishing hone or a pasted paddle strop from Tony Miller. Another option would be one of his bench hones if you want to go with a single grit of abrasive (I use 0.5 micron chromium oxide on mine, with great results).

Thanked: 8You have a choice of several members for honing.
Firstly there is Lynn Abrams, honemeister extrordinaire (Adjustme69) and founder of SRP.
You can also consider Joe Chandler who also offers this service and is also excellent.
There others but I'm not sure if they are open for business. eg Bill Ellis (Urleebird) who gets blades scary sharp.
I have razors from all of these gentlemen and they are all excellent shavers.
OK guys...send the checks..

Thanked: 0I've PMed Joe Chandler about honing up the Timor, and have heard a few good things about the razor from other users so far. So I think I'm doing ok with a brand new razor for 40 bucks. I hope so anyways haha
Thanks All,
