Here Here! Just tell them the truth, "It's a razor and it's very sharp and until you're older you shouldn't touch it because it can hurt you very badly. When you're ready to shave I'll be happy to show you how if you want to use a straight razor. For now I keep them locked up for everyones protection. It's a tool like any other tool and it must be used properly".

I have a shaving travel bag and the zipper has a hole in it, I use a mini suitcase lock and lock it to the side of the bag where the pull strap is. If its too long use a leather hole punch or something to make a hole and lock it, thats what I do. I have also found to shave with the door locked so my little nephew doesn't come flying in throwing the door open hitting me with the door or grabbing me let me tell you its a sure way to get a cut.

Or you can do what I did when I got a good bleeder early on.
I screamed like I had been shot in the groin, and stumbled out of the bathroom moaning in agony, blood dripping from my face. Even though it didn't need it, I had my wife butterfly the cut and put a dressing on it for several days.
My children don't go near my razors and my 15 yr old treats his razors with extreme caution. My 5 year old Still uses a plastic butterknife to pretend he's shaving though.
On the flip side I concentrate much better on my shaves since that bleeder too .

Thanked: 0First off, congrats on the baby!!!
As with all potentially dangerous things, the best prevention is knowledge. When the little one is too young to understand then by all means hide/lock/place out of reach. Once they are old enough to understand that a knife will cut, then sit them down and talk to them about Daddy's razors. I have found that a demonstration of the tools (whatever it is) will suffice to deter any unwanted experimentation. Show them the HHT and then ask them what would happen if that hair were their finger. I can also show them a couple of scars that can help to drive home the point.
I have 3 daughters (so won't be teaching anyone to shave their face with a straight). Since I just recently began using a straight all I had to do was tell them that they are very sharp and could quite easily cut off their ear or nose (they are 14, 10 and 7 yrs, so that was ehough).
As far as passing along the usage of a straight, I they want to use a striagh on their legs, I will gladly show them (but not demonstrate on myself).
Even though I didn't need to teach them about straight razors when they were younger, I have always had lots of sharp implements around the house (knives, chisels, saws...) and didn't have a problem teaching them to respect the potential hazards.
Good luck, and get all the sleep you can now...you'll need it!!!
