Thanked: 1Personal rotation... what's the criteria...?
I see a lot of members speaking of his (or her) "rotation." Does this mean that they have a Monday razor and a Tuesday razor and so on? What criteria decides which razors are used and when? Does one pick out 3 or 4 and hone the ones not in use in between? Im not sure I understand the concept. I have two straights that I use, Ill use one until it needs a hone and then ill use the other one (i'm sure I will acquire more) what do you all do? im interested in the philosophy behind it.

Thanked: 3228I don't know about a fixed rotation but I have a few razors and pick from them at random so I guess that is my rotation. Some get used more frequently than others and when I notice one is shaving a little off it gets a tune up.

Thanked: 1184So you have a rotation of 2. I have a rotation of 8. It's all up to you. I use a different one everyday and then strop them on Sun. Just my way. If I like a new one more than one I have been using then I move one out and start using the new one regularly. My thing is space or I might have more in rotation. It's what makes you happy and what works best for you ! I have only been at this a few months but I am finding favorites as I go and trying new types of blades.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

It varies a great deal from person to person. Some have a very systematic approach that rotates razors in and out of rotation on a regular basis. Others will adopt something like what you suggested (the classic 7-day set). And others (like me!) have a small number of razors that they particularly like and use on a regular basis, as well as a bunch of others that get used less often if at all.
In my case I have three on regular rotation (with a heavy bias to one particular one), one other that I'll grab from time to time when the fancy strikes, and a whole bunch of others that are just kind of sitting there. Some of them I will use from time to time when I feel like a change, while others are waiting for me to decide whether to sell or give away or ??. And then there's the half-dozen or so that are in some stage of restoration, but they don't really count as they aren't viable options for use.
Part of it for me is a question of physical space. I carved myself a soapstone razor stand a while back that holds three razors. Those are my main ones in rotation. Just behind them on the shelf in a silicone-treated razor sleeve is the other one that I'll use from time to time. If I had had a larger hunk of soapstone, I'd probably have more in regular rotation.
But I suspect that others have put a LOT more thought into their systems than I have!
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Not to hi-jack this thread, do you have thread started on this, could you either start another thread or post pictures of this stand here? I would love to see this stand.
Thank you.

[QUOTE=Floundermike;1103767]Here you go. It has since been modified slightly (one of the slots widened slightly to accommodate a big old FBU), but other than that it has worked out extremely well.

The criteria for my rotation is to not use the same razor I used yesterday, simple and effective.

Before you start selling, consider keeping your nice stuff in Canada, would you? OH it's also my birthday in March *winks*
