    Default Searching on Google

Just did a search on Google for "Straight Razors". Our site comes up on page 9 (nine). Wow! I guess we will remain the best kept secret on the internet for a while huh?

They expect you to pay them a nice chunk of change if you want them to push up your page.

No, but it can also be a part of the hosting package, so if Robert's hosting company throws in a bit extra to make the sites they host a bit more visible....

Hosting companies may offer fee based services to increase rank/placement but nothing is a guarantee. The ads at the top and to the right are paid advertising, the more you spend, the more exposure you get.

The rest of the pages are generated based on many different things through good search engine optimization techniques, which include the right keywords amount of frequency and if they're linked the right way, body copy and many other things determines how a page/site is relevant to a particular search phrase. The better this is done the better your placement, usually.

This is a misconception that has plagued google for a long time. They do not accept pay-for-placement for their search results. They do receive pay-for-placement for the ads that appear in the blue backgrounds across the top and side of search results, and these are clearly labelled "sponsored results."

How did they make all that money? Easy. It's called "IPO." They also do have products producing positive revenue streams. Right now they are swimming in money and really don't have any reason to engage in anything underhanded with their most well-known product.

One factor which has long helped is the number of links TO your site from other indexed sites. Perhaps SRP is not an oft-linked-to site? I don't know.

Nobody know the exact metrics & algorithms Google (or most other search engines) utilize for placement of sites. These are closely guarded industry secrets. Google had initially refused a subpoena several months back from the US Government regarding searches, stating if they were to disclose those results competitors might be able to reverse-engineer their algorithms.
