Just an additional update here...

There is a custom "mod" for the forum that automatically resizes pictures larger than a certain max size... the default being 640x480. It's intent is to take care of the problem we're discussing here... ie, users inserting oversized linked graphics. I have seen the results on several other forums that appear to be using it.

IMHO, this "fix" doesn't always take care of the problem in a 'nice' way... so I don't particularly want to install it. As many of you have experienced, pictures don't always 'look good' after they're resized. Sometimes you'd rather crop the picture than resize it, etc. So, I think it's best left up to the poster as to how they want the end result to look.

If anyone needs help in understanding the tools and/or mechanics of resizing, cropping, etc. please start a thread in the off-topic forum and I'm sure you'll get plenty of help and guidance.

I've used both tools (crop and re-size) and they work just fine. Certain hosting sites like Imageshack offer an automatic resize to 640x480 feature.
