On again Off again St8 User
Wow so things got really busy there about January which saw me start using my DE's again. It got so bad, I even ended up bringing my brush and creams into the shower and shaved in there with it all lol!! Sacrilegious I know lol!! But alas - even the extra 5 minutes was seemingly needed + I admit it... I got lazy .
BUT:
Today, well today was a big day with a few events that I had to attend. I took it easy this morning and pulled out my scuttle, soap, glycerine... and made myself a nice hot Uber. Then I pulled out my favorite - my Swede! And stropped her up!
Gents it was heaven!! Heck it was as if I had never stopped using my straights. Moreover, to my amazement, I didn't forget to stretch! It was an awesome shave... it was like coming home lol. Moreover, after all was said and done, I rubbed the alum over the old face and balm - not an ounce of burn!!
I am kind of shocked. I guess pleasantly surprised should be the term. I just thought it would have been a harder transition.
What about you guys? Ever transition back to a straight after a long hiatus and find it painless?David

Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Thanked: 270When I started with a straight it could take 30-45 minutes to shave, so there were lots of times when I had to reach for the DE, sometimes the majority of the time. Even if it wasn't time constraints, some of those early days left me pretty marked up and I had to give it a rest. Or I could have kept whacking away and made a little money renting my face out to Halloween parties.
Over time, I got bored with the DE and continued to be drawn to the straights. The skills got to where they needed to be, not only the shaving but the honing and stropping (with the latter I still have my moments of madness). I can get a great shave in about 15 minutes, so it's not a problem any more. I have used the DE probably about five times in the last 6-8 months.
It doesn't surprise me that you can pick up where you left off with the straight.

I'm about to found out myself and I hope to experience the same type of shave. My straights have been packed away since last September and I have been shaving with my DE's as we sold our house and moved in to a temporary residence for 5 months. But now we are in the new house and the unpacking has begun. Just need to figure where to hang my strops and I should be good to go. The BIG decision I have to make is, which razor to use first?

Thanked: 37Welcome back!
The longest I've been was a week last june when we flew over to Illinois for a one week cello seminar for my daughter. I took the DE, a small bottle pre-shaveoil and my Omega synthetic brush. Just like thebigspendur said It's like riding a bike, but it was more appreciated, like an absence makes the heart grow fonder type of feeling.Arise, awake, and learn by approaching the exalted ones,

does one day count?
Been shaving with a SR for a 1 1/2 years now with less than a handful of DE shaves in that time.
Just one DE shave makes me enjoy the straight even more.
