    Default Memory Lane!

Well today I took a walk down memory lane!

About 3 1/2 years ago I got tired of the expense of shaving with the disposables and the cartridge razors and plus I’ve always had a rebellious streak in me (thanks dad) I pulled out a straight razor that was left to me by my father’s oldest sister, it was her husbands. Well I didn’t have a strop so I broke out the canned goop and had at it. Hmmmmm strange thing, it actually would shave, comfortable? NO! But it would shave.

I figured that my years as a meat cutter would come in handy so I broke out my Norton Oil Tri Stone and gave it a go on the finest stone and tried again the next day.

Boy was that a mistake!!! Even this dumb redneck country boy could tell that sharpening a razor was far different from sharpening a straight razor.

I started looking online for info and found a site that offered ‘honing’ I sent the razor off and about 3 weeks later and $25 poorer I got it back, I once again gave it a go and Whoa! I found it ‘scary sharp’! However when I asked questions about how it was honed all I got was silence, no email, nothing!

I had acquired a leather strop from a friend and I was actually able to maintain the edge for about 3 months, then the tugging and pulling set in.

Long story made shorter, I’d finally found SRP and had joined, what a difference in websites!! Friendliness, Fellowship, Helpfulness!!

Since I joined about 3 years ago I’ve been blessed with making friends from the USA to the UK to India, Germany and Australia.

As I said at the beginning of this long winded post I took a trip down memory lane today and shaved with my very first straight razor, my Uncle Walt’s Genco Grant 9/16 Straight Point. I hadn’t used it in more than a year so I thought that I’d check and see if I had properly honed it back then or if I was ‘lacking’, I got a very nice shave, but as we all seem to do, I’m wondering if I could improve the edge!

I thank you for taking the time to read about my adventure!
