It is charcoal, it will run a little less then 20 hours on a basket full of charcoal and hold the 225-250 range very good. Not much to look at but a good performer. It has two 22 inch grates.Quote:

There are two levels, it will hold two briskets. There is also a small door on the side to add wood for smoke.

Im flying into OKC 2/20/19. Is there anyone else who may want to split a rental car? Also looking for someone to split a room with at Twilite.
Would love to attend and meet some of the famous people I see here on the forum and on YouTube, if this is the right meeting. This meeting seems to be primarily for folks building razors and I would love to do that, but I don't think that's going to happen at this stage of my life. What I really need is some help with light restoration, building and installing scales, and honing. Would this meeting be appropriate or should I seek a different venue?
The meeting is one of those things that it is what you want to make it to be.
Ask your questions and there is someone there that can answer them.
If you have something to demonstrate others will watch.
The couple of times that I have attended it wasn't scripted and I have ended coming away with a couple of lessons that I hadn't thought of before I arrived.
And putting faces and voices to what I read on the internet is priceless!
There is an extreme amount of talent there for sure, but there is no question too simple.

I bought a 5” block, for a variety of reasons. That sucker weighs about 20#ish. Weight is why I did not bring it last year. You can get not GRS brand blocks from an outfit in California. I have long lost the link. They are basically Chinese knock off but the price difference is amazing. If memory serves me correct a 5” GRS is just unde $1,000 but a Chinese knock of is around $300 shipped. Needless to say I do not have a brand name one. I checked it very closely when I bought mine and there was no appreciable difference. The size, weight, everything was the same. They weight enough that I did not want to buy one from China, for fear of it getting killed in shipping. Buying from China was even les than buying a Chinese’s one from California, but not enough to make it worth the shippping damage risk. There are smaller blocks and you can likely get away with a 3” block and never know what you missed. I use mine for all kinds of stuff and because of its weight, I find it great for staking razors when I am restoring, it has become indispensable in the hoarders corner.
Diboll, This is absolutely the right meet for what you want. There is a lot of forging and grinding going on in the forge room, but there are thousands of square feet of other area for scales, honing, strops and just general hanging out, eating, and BSing. This is 'The Meet'. You will be glad to be out of the dust and noise.Quote:

Diboll, The talent and expertise in all things straight razor shaving related that the people attending the Texas meet have is second to none and virtually off the charts. I don't think you'll ever find this kind of learning opportunity anywhere but there, once a year. Dave's meetup in Wisconsin is very close, but being that you already live in Texas, this shouldn't be missed.

I made a billet of meteorite damascus and some other damascus and a couple of razor blanks. Jaime (who goes by the name 'tarka' these days) made a kitchen knife. Pete made a razor, TC made a razor, Bonnie (Dave's wife) made a metal rose under the instruction of the local blacksmith, etc.
There were also some visitors and bystanders, and as Tim said: the meet is generally what people want it to be for themselves. If you are into scales and restoration, you will definitely be able to do stuff and participate. And if you are interested in giving it a try, there is a high likelihood you will walk away with a razor that you made yourself. Several people have done it in the past year. Both Pete and TC made their first razor without previous experience.
If it were financially possible I would attend like I did the previous years but it is what it is and I am going to have to skip this year. Already looking forward to the one after it, and planning to sell enough stuff that I can afford it.
Well, you guys convinced me. If health allows and I can find a place to stay, I plan to be there.
I will be there at leasr friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I am wnating to set up some sort of competition. Problem os time. Was thinoing anout doing some sort of cable san mai with w2 or 1095 core razor. Just think somendort of challenge (other than eating tc's fantastic grillworks) . Would require a complete razor....
I need to find some cable....

Not a competition, just accomplishing clean billet out of the cable would be a win in my books! THEN accomplishing a clean weld on the 1095 or O1 would be a even better!
