Did he have passion?

I was flipping through the TV channels the other day when I stopped to answer the phone. After hanging up, I turned back to the TV. I decided to watch the movie that I had stopped on for no particular reason. I was happy that I did.
The movie, Serendipity, is an ok movie - entertaining if you have nothing better to do. But a simple line caught my attention, “When a man died in ancient Greece, they asked only one question: ‘Did he have passion?’” I searched to see if this quote had any validity, but could not find an answer. I decided, however, that I didn’t care if the ancient Greeks had actually said this or not - it made enough sense to me to not matter.
Did he have passion? Passion for what or who? A person can be passionate about many things in life. So if the Greeks did ask this simple question after a person died, what did they mean? I cannot answer what I think Greeks might have meant (if it is at all true), but to me it can mean only one thing: Passion for life.
When I sit and think about the history of man, I am dumbfounded. There are thousands upon thousands of years that man has roamed this earth. Yet one person usually does not live to be 100 years old. That’s only a ripple in the ocean, so that ripple had better help make waves.
Did he have passion? At my death I hope that question is asked and I hope the answer is yes. Most people live fairly simple lives, as do I, but I like to believe that it’s what you make of your life, simple or not, that makes a person.
Passion, as described by Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is an intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or conviction. To live life with passion, then, one must find what drives he or she forward each day. To merely exist is not enough - we all must live for something.
Many people have passion. Just the other day I spoke with a friend who is spending a large portion of her summer in Mexico helping children in Mexico. She has to have passion for human life to donate her time and energy to others in need. She has found, at least for now, passion in her life, an emotion or love so strong she had to act on it.
Others might say someone like the ageless Betty White has passion. The actress has forever had a love for animals and she works in every way to help animals and raise animal awareness. In her life animals become a passion for Betty White and she will be remembered for that passion.
Passion can be spread beyond a love for people and animals; it can be a love for music or nature or writing or religion or a passion to your significant other.
I know I have found different things in my short life that I had different intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or convictions for. I don’t know that they have been long-lived enough for anyone to ask if I had passion and answer yes convincingly. But, I know there are different people and things in my life that are and could mature into different passions.
“Did he have passion?” I hope one day the answer for me will overwhelmingly be yes.
