Thanked: 5Shaved my buddies head...
Well, ever since one of my friends found out I started shaving with a straight razor, he wanted me to shave his head. I swore up and down that I wasn't going to do it but after getting more comfortable with a razor on my own face, I decided to do it. Was I nervous? YES! My primary concern was that the head is like a giant chin which is the most troublesome part of my shave. He has a "landing strip" on the top of his head so I didn't have to worry about the top portion and he is starting to bald so a small section of his head was no sweat at all...
I decided to treat his head like I treat my face and did the same basic process. He had already taken a shower and applied lotion to his scalp earlier in the day so for the most part his head was soft. I took the electric clippers to his dome to try to remove as many hairs as possible prior to the shave. After this was done I had him wrap his head in a hot towel for about 10 minuets or so. After that I splashed a little H20 on the scalp and applied a thin layer of Art of Shaving pre shave oil. Then I brushed on a nice lather of MWF soap and got ready. After the soap had set for a moment I broke out my Dovo Best Quality 6/8 and gritted my teeth.
To be honest, it was a hell of a lot easier that I thought it was going to be. I never realized how little at times you can see of your own face while shaving. When shaving someone else you can see everything. My primary concern was matching the right angle so I wouldn't cut his scalp. Being able to see exactly where the razor is touching the skin is a great help. I did my best to follow the grain of the hair which was a challenge at times but worth the effort. After one WTG pass it was time to strop again before the XTG pass so I re-lathered his head and touched up the razor. The second pass was much easier than the first, it went much faster. Once twice shaved he washed his head with cold water and I applied my Art of Shaving after shave cream and that was that. Only one small nick to speak of.
The look on his face was hilarious when he felt his head. He couldn't believe it. Kind of like my first st8 razor shave! It was actually fun to do and was a great learning experience. One of the most important things that I learned (from you guys and gals..) is to not only follow the grain but STOP if you feel ANY resistance. I believe this tip was what resulted in a close shave with out blood loss. I will do it again when he asks, and he said he would pay me for it so that works for me! Total time start to finish 45~
Give it a shot some time, you will enjoy it!
