Thread: Kranks Kutlery Two piece strop (Christmas is near)

Kranks Kutlery vintage two piece Strop. Strop has been used but is in excellent shape for being about 100 years old. Leather is still soft and playable. Canvas in great condition. Handles intact with no cracks or missing stitching. Strop measures 26 inches including hardware and handles. Strop leather alone measures 16 inches by 2 ½ inches. At top it is embossed “RED-DOT”. On handle gold embossed “A.J. KRANK - ST. PAUL OF MINNEAPOLIS - in Laurel wreath 781 - in circle KRANKS KUTLERY KUTS”. Hardware is brass coated but much of the brass is worn off. A few tiny nicks on edge and one in center but Strop is still very serviceable. Hardware polished with Mother's metal polish.

Alfred Jacob Krank was the son of a Bavarian immigrant, although he was Minnesotan by birth and upbringing. Responsibility came early to a young Alfred as the oldest child and only male in an all-girl family with a recently widowed mother. In 1880, at the age of 14, his schooling ended because he needed to find work to help support his mother and young sisters. His first job was with a cutlery manufacturer as a scissor grinder and in a mark of his enterprise and thriftiness just four years later, and with capital of only $25; he was able to establish his own business in the same field. There was one important difference, though, because as well as dealing with cutlery his newly formed A J Krank & Co also handled barbers’ supplies.

By 1890 the success of his business was such that he was able to merge with the company he had started with ten years earlier. Under the company name Schnell & Krank the business continued to be advertised as ‘Cutlers, Grinders and Barbers’ Supplies’ for the next thirteen years until Alfred Krank assumed full control of the company in his own right.
