    That is what I thought.

7 degrees is VERY low. I have played with a few blades that low and (dare I say it?) they were too sharp for my tastes. Additionally you must have a stellar steel/heat treat for an edge to exist that low...and even then it will be fragile and susceptible to collapse at that angle.

    YMMV

Bob and Unit ..... it is the smiling Case Bros Springville, NY that I have posted pix of before. It is super hard steel, or at least abrasion resistant. Tried honing it with one layer when I first go it but it was difficult to tape, and I went sans tape. Still maintained a narrow bevel and got a good edge after a lot of work. Very little hone wear and a narrow bevel, that has held up well in maybe half a dozen shaves, in spite of the narrow spine.

Can't argue success but the spine seemed awfully narrow at 1.4mm as I measured my SSA 4/8 at the spine for a 4.2mm width. There is next to no hone wear on the SSA. When I plugged your numbers into the app I got a 7 degree angle without tape too. Plugged my numbers in for the SSA and got 19.8 degrees without tape and that is a tad on the high side to the supposed optimum. I could see where taping a smiling blade could be a PITA to do.

Gentleman, the spine, at the point end, is .222" measured with a micrometer. I had measured the thing with a metric dial caliper before but I'm a little rusty on reading the thing. Not wanting to risk banging the edge, I'm reading the width eyeballing up against a ruler, and it shows a full 4/8" or 14mm from the top of the honing flat to the bottom of the cutting edge. Are we still @ the same # of degrees ?

Thanks for all the input. I'll try adjusting my technique a bit. I've taped it as it has a small amount of hone wear on the spine. I'll use the bevel calculator later to determine the angle and tell you what it is later.

    Thanks again, Todd

Yea, I don't think using the tape hurt anything and using the bevel calculator is an easy cross check to see if you are with in a normal range.

Today I went and bought a cheap LED readout micrometer because I can't read the dial one that well anymore and it has been quite a while since I used one. Converting .222 inches to metric I get 5.6mm rounded off. That and the 14mm in the app brings up an angle of 23.1 without tape.

Ahh, thanks Bob, so tape would've been too much of a good thing as far as angle goes. Probably why I got such a thin bevel. The pix I posted have reflection that makes the bevel look wider than it is in life. Anyway, now I'm sure I can't read a metric dial caliper properly.

Todd, didn't mean to hijack your thread ...... at least it was on topic.

Yea, apologies to Todd for going off on a technical tangent and hijacking the thread.

Hey I don't mind the thread being hijacked; looks like I brought up a good topic, or a least one that led to a good rabbit trail. I will learn something no matter what.
