Thanks for everyone's advice! I finally placed an order! Since the wife's replacement screen was on Amazon for $25, I just went ahead and ordered the Norton 4k/8k and the DMT (free shipping and no taxes on all). I feel this was the wisest choice given my options and budget. The Naniwa 12k will have to come later. I will take y'all's advice to master the 8k first before allowing myself to get the Nani. Thanks again guys for all the excellent help. I love this place!!!

As it was said in the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade movie: “You have chosen ‘Wisely’!

When you receive your hone and DMT, please watch Glen’s video about preparing the 4/8 as it’s very important!

Even if you didn’t purchase the stone holders this can be done! It’s just harder to keep the DMT level and all. You will need to soak the hone and then start using the holder that comes with the 4/8 on a counter top, but keep getting the hone wet!

Also I'm a little paronoid and I always use fresh water between grits, not matter what I'm doing! It may seem a little weird to some but it's worked well for me!

Thank you so much for the vid! Man, can't believe how helpful you guys have been. I really, really appreciate it. I will be sure to soak the hone before use and use it in its holder. I figured a spray bottle with water would be handy? I believe I saw a video of a honemeister using one to rewet the stone.

My friend, you have joined the most Friendly, Helpful and Informative site on the Web!!

The squirt bottle will come in handy ‘later’! That’s when you are Honing. Personally, I only use one on occasion as I hone by my kitchen sink.

Make sure that before you start lapping the 4/8 that you have your grid marks in pencil and that then that the 4/8 has soaked for at least an hour (watch for air bubbles/when none continue to come out your set to go). If you see air bubbles adhering to the hone, wipe them off and then keep watching!

When lapping that 4/8 just keep dunking it in water! You may even want to leave it submerged for a bit before proceeding!

Also keep flipping the hone end for end as you will unwillingly be favoring the pressure and if you don’t you will wear one end more than the other/or even side to side!!!

    I speak from personal experience!

Good Luck and please let us know how you are doing with your venture!

I took this same advice and I am doing just fine. I do use the Norton lapping stone and I guess I got lucky because I have had no problems with it at all. I later bought a king 250/1000 k for repairing e-Bay razors and although it is working out it is only 2 inches wide and drives me nuts sometimes. I have yet to go to a finisher and after 8 months of using them I am only beginning to feel I would know how to use it and/or feel the difference. Plus there is the strop factor. If you don't use one of those right you might as well forget even trying the hone. Your on the right track just don't spend before you need to and learn more about what you want. I started out wanting the same thing as you but now I am thinking about a $200 dollar finisher. No I don't need it but I WANT it :<0) I read something around here somewhere that said, it wasn't all that long ago and a 4/8 Norton was all they had to use. I look at the rest as going beyond what's needed. Not a bad thing, a luxury.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Always remember that what you 'want' may not be what you need!!

You didn't specify if you used the Norton 4/8 daily. Perhaps I missed it.

While I'm very pleased (and so are many others) with the results of my honing off of the Norton 4/8 and the Naniwa 12K my good friend pinklather is bringing the newly purchased G20 that I helped him with this fall to try before we go to the Northwest Meet. While he has thousands invested in hones, he will tell you that my edges at least for him are Excellent and he has posted many times about them.

With this said; I could live off of a Norton 8K edge for the rest of my life!

My counsel is to Master the Norton, then move one
