Many Thanks to SRD
I mailed my vintage razor ( a Hoffritz 30 year old 5/8) which I had abused on the strop many times before the internet and and SRP taught me what I ought to be doing. I got it back today after about 2 weeks (mailing time included) and it is a great shaver. Thank you guys at SRP and SRD! You are the best!
Maybe someday I'll try to hone myself!

Thanked: 270I think you made a very important point. Sometimes new straight shavers blame themselves when things don't go right, but it is not always the shaver's fault.
That's why shaving forums are invaluable. You learn from the experiences of others.
I can't imagine what it would have been like to learn how to use a straight razor before the internet era. Certainly much more difficult. I think it's possible that straight razor shaving was largely replaced by safety razors due to the lack of training materials. If you couldn't do it yourself, you grew a beard or paid a barber for every shave you got. On Page 6 of the Shaving Made Easy book (1905) Shaving made easy; what the man who shaves ought to know .. : 20th century correspondence school, New York. [from old catalog] : Free Download & Streaming : Internet Archive , the authors said that it was written due to the lack of instruction available.
