Default Remind Me Why This Hone is Special?

I was going through my box of stray hones and found this… remembered that honists and honemeisters had flagged this particular hone as somehow special or a valuable find, but I do not recall why! It has been lapped on the grey side--it's smooth and level, but lacks the glossy surface that is on the red side and still evident on the edges. Has it been ruined?

Yes it is ruined. Send it to me and I'll properly dispose of it.

Kidding aside, is that one of those ax man's hones that the Australians pay the big bux for ? Not sure.

Anyhow, you can get the glossy surface back by lapping with progressively finer grits and maybe a final buffing. ChrisL has posted a thread somewhere on that. A few years ago but you might find it with advanced search.

If I'm not mistaken some barber hones are alright to lap and others are made so that the abrasive is up at the top and are better off left as is. Randy could probably tell you for sure.
