New Naniwa 12K
I just purchased a Naniwa 12K Do I need to prepare it in any way other than to wet the stone for first time use?
My razors have all been professionally honed so I am just looking to touch them up when the leather strop and paste
stop giving me a shave-ready edge

Thanked: 177Lap it! Draw lines on the stone with pencil and lap it. Mine was off quite a bit when I got it, yours may be ok or not, you wont know til you lap it.

Definitely lap it. Mine wasn't off too bad, but you never know. Then, enjoy it!

I'd be sure to draw a grid a couple times as the lines can be washed away in some places instead of lapped.
Good stone though.

I lapped mine twice on 220 then (once on all of the rest of these) on 325, 1000, 4000, and finally on 8000. I would have finished on 6000 but I don't have a 6000 so I went with 8000. The usual rule of thumb is to lap up to 1/2 of what the hone is. (just putting that out there in case you didn't know) I basicaly color the top of my hones wirh a pencil and clean my lapping plates, by rubning them with a drop of dish soap a couple times, after each hone I love mine, they're great and you don't have to wait for them to soak like bottoms or king hones. Best of luck and have fun they do a wonderful job.

I agree, lap the stone. They are usually not flat.
A man should only look in the mirror when he shaves.
