Thread: Vintage Thuringian score--double whammy

Hello everyone,

I am totally stoked after having scored two old hones which I believe to be Thuringians over the weekend. I would love to hear your thoughts on them. I will post pictures of the second one (gray/dark blue) soon and also get a slurry going on them both.

Interesting combination of layers on this one between blue and green/yellow green (I am far from expert on this). I hope the characteristic mining/saw marks are visible in these shots. Very dense stone, obviously much more so than a coticule. The full 2" width will be very helpful, I think.

From pictures, I think could be an Escher - Barber's Delight. Nice score, congrats.

Did they sell Barbers Delight in this size and with slurry stone?

It looks like a remnant of a label (or at least the adhesive) on this end of the stone. It has a beautiful light texture. Really dense stuff.

The width on this one is 1.5"+. I think I'm going to like how it feels against the steel. I was going from memory when I said this one is gray/blue. It has a nice green color but not as vibrant as the Barber's Delight.

For what I know, the size for a Barbers Delight is 6 X 2 rubber was extra piece, but I can be wrong, not sure.

Nice score! Ever since my honing session with Randy and Rod, I have been actively looking for some nice finishing hones. What a treat it would be to find just one small Escher, and then I see you found two nice big hones. Here's to hoping.

"Barbers Delight" thuringian stones are special sized hones of 6 x 2 inch in a selected quality, but not necessarily combination stones Blue/Yellow green. There are also barbers delight stones which are simply yellow green. Don’t know if also other colors exists.

Natural combination thuringians were delivered in all common sizes, means from the small 5 inch to the large 10 inch hones.
The largest one I own is a 9 inch Escher labeled hone that comes from an old barber:
