Thread: Nani 12k and Nagura stone

My hats off to gssixguns for his recommend regarding whether or not I should purchase a 12k as my first hone.

Well, he not only did that but suggested a Nagura "slurry" stone to make it even more versatile. Then he pointed me to "One stone hone" approach.

While I didn't need to set a bevel on my Koeller and Schmitz, it would not cut hair. Not even close to cutting hair when pressed against the arm. Using the slurry that the Nagura produced on the 12k, the proper pressure from 3 fingers and demonstrated technique(video howtos), this newb was able to bring the dullard back to life. I can say I've never seen a razor fell so many hanging follicles. I'm nothing less than stunned. This blade was definitely not a 5 laps and your done razor. I had to "push the edge" on heel and toe, do sythe passes, circles and everything else I could remember.

My heel out modded F & R was a little easier, though, as Glen mentioned, the Sheffield steel seemed to take a bit more time to come alive.

Honing wasn't nearly as hard as I'd imagined it, but I can only attribute this to the massive education effort from SRP and its members in advance of my first attempt.

I thank everybody. Honing was a very pleasurable and relaxing experience. I think I understand how HAD happens now.

I really worked wonders for me. The 12k by itself wasn't touching the edge of that F&R. I didn't think it would without probably hours of honing. That lil' Nagura slurried me up a serious cuttin' mix.

Does that slurry come from nagura or hone? Or is it a mixture?

Depends how hard the slurry stone is. The only way to find out is to raise some slurry and look at the color it makes. I don't think it matters though as the results were good. Slurry works great. Most natural stone are used with slurry stones.

By the time you understand how it happens your too late and there is no help but to buy some more. Just for curiosity sake of course.

It is an Artificial Nagura a Synthetic slurry stone, it is pretty soft, so it breaks down easily it will release a great cutting slurry and mix with grit released from the Hone, these are tricks to get more out of a one stone/hone system...

People tend to forget or never learn that slurry can be generated and used on many Synthetics hones too, it is just another tool in the bag.. if you have a progression you don't need to use it but if you learn to use slurries it adds to the honing arsenal...
