The Naniwa 12,000 is definitely a softer stone, and i agree with Lynn, it gives great feed back. I like the stone.

I've recently started myself using the Naniwa 12k as my finisher. Seems to give a good edge, I don't really have anything to compare it to though as I have been honing for all of about a week now. On a good note, it seems to be forgiving, well, either that or I'm just naturally amazing... I'd lean towards forgiving though.

You, sir, are not good for my ego
I use the nani 8 and 12 for maintenance. After reading many threads and watching many videos, I felt I was as good a honemeister as any on the board.

Although I know that not to be true, the nanis are treating me (and my ego) well.

And here my intent was to be humble, believing it was more luck than anything else... If it makes your ego feel better, your avatar is cooler than mine... lol The 8/12 combo for routine maintenance sounds like a pretty solid idea though.

At my level of (in)experience, I will begrudgingly admit that luck is a huge factor

Don't know if that would make a noticeable difference, though it would kinda make sense.
I'm in the same boat as you. The "soft" feel seems to me to provide the feedback I need to my hand immediately to correct bad technique as soon as my hand notices something going awry. Does that make sense?
