    正 kinda means true but that doesn't make sense with the second kanji
    本 true
    山 mine
    合 this kanji may be wrong and it's also incomplete as I can't see the bottom

    This is really no help although it may have the mine name because of 山 and the bottom kanji I can't recognise.

    It reads from the top down

    Sho =correct
    Hon =original
    Zan =mountain (yama + zan are the same kanji character just different pronouncations as per usage)
    Awase =sharpening
    Toishi =stone (part of the toishi kanji is missing at the bottom)

    Good Luck

    See if the last kanji character looks like this; 砥

    Stefan is correct, left to right as in the photo (top to bottom if the stone were twisted).

    Does any of this give any indication of its hardness rating ie is it a medium, course or fine stone ?

    Technically a finishing stone if you believe the stamp but even then not necessarily for razors.
